[Camarillo CA] NORRCA's 6th race of the
"Paved Oval Series" was held Aug. 22 at Freedom Park in Camarillo CA. This
is the home of the Ventura Road Runners R/C club. It had been several years since
this track held an Oval Series Race but it was fun getting back there. The track was
formed into a egg shaped oval measuring approx. 220 ft. in the groove. Flat, sealed,
unsprayed asphalt was the surface. The complete Points Standings to date, are posted
below.
Sportsman Stock
"Sava's patience
pays off"
Nick Sava was able to follow the leaders as Todd Keizer (TQ) and Sam
Chaloupka battled for the front spot. Sava'a patience paid off when the leaders were both
caught up in incidents, giving Nick the lead. Sava, driving what was dubed "The
Rent a Wreck" was able to hold on, once he got out front and go on to win his Second
Race of the Series. Keizer and Chaloupka finished 2 and 3, really tightening the
points battle for the championship. Steve Kjorlien was fourth with Marvin Avila coming in
5th.
The Championship in Sportsman Stock will not be decided until the FINAL event at the Encino Velodrome. Alot will depend on the number of entries, as well as the finishing positions of the front point contenders. Four of the top 5 on the points list have already used their throw-out race. Therefore a large field could really change the outcome of this series.
Expert Stock
"Newman Takes the
Top Spot"
Paul Cathey set the qualifying pace running a 37/ 4:06.21, over Larry Ruby's 36/
4:01.03, Chris Newman's 36/ 4:01.74 and Bill McAneney's 36/ 4:01.79. So the field
was set for some tight exciting racing.
The "A" main was to go to Chris Newman. Newman beat out Bill McAneney by about a 1/2 second and all five of the top five finishers were on the same lap at the end of the race. Larry Ruby finished 3rd, with Paul Cathey and Roland Chavarry bring in the 4th and 5th spots.
Only Carlo Albera can still challenge for a Co-Champion postion in this series, needing to TQ and win the final event. He would also have to have Larry Ruby finish out of the top 7, in order to end in a tie.
Sportsman Modified
It's Cortney, again...
Cortney Able was NOT the TQ this time, the #1 spot would
go to Jason Hastings with a 38/4:05.65 over Cortney's 37/4:00.29. But, in the main
it was Cortney outrunning Felipe Avila by just over a second. Todd Nalley, last
years Series Champion, finished in the 3rd spot with Vince Guzman and TJ Kendall 4th and
5th.
This win gives Cortney the NORRCA Sportsman Modified Paved Oval Series Championship, since nobody can gain enough points to catch him.
EXPERT MODIFIED
"The Battle gets Tighter"
Brian Boudakian set the qualifying pace with a run of 40/ 4:10.95,
out qualifying Frank Killam's 39/ 4:03.25. Boudakians TQ was to put him up a point
in the standings, but TEAM BOWERS went on the win the main, and
Frank Killam was able to get the 2nd spot, Boudakian had to settle for 3rd which left the
2 drivers with the same point spread going into the Final Series Event at the Encino
Velodrome next month. Finishing 4th was Gary Hamilton and Trace Boden was 5th.
The Expert Modified Points are only seperated by ONE point for the championship heading into the Final Series Event of the year. Christopher Bowers (TEAM BOWERS) holds a narrow lead over Brian Boudakian. Steve Jacques is in third spot and Eric Larsen is a solid 4th.
Modified NASTRUCK
"Myers secures Truck Championship"
Joe Myers took TQ and went on to WIN the "A" main
clinching the Truck Series Championship over Tom Kendall, for the second straight year.
Vic Nalley, who qualified 2nd went on the finish 3rd.
ROOKIE
Kendall win's
Rookie driver Matt Kendall won by default
again which this weekend, being the "only" entry to show in this
class. This also clinched the Rookie of the Year Title for Kendall.
The Rookie class was designed to allow "NEW" racers a place to compete. NORRCA only charges 1/2 the normal Series Entry fee for this class. If you've never raced before but have an interest, I encourage you to come try this class at the next NORRCA Series Race near you.
