Scottish All Rover Rally 2005

The eleventh annual Scottish All Rover Rally got off to a damp start on Saturday 28th May, but a dedicated group of Roverites set off from Perth Racecourse, undaunted but damp, on the Tayside Tour.

Ian H and Brian McC had devised a superb route and some (not too difficult) clues to direct and entertain the crews along the way.

The Beech Hedge was passed along the route to Blairgowrie, and then we were out into the glens and heading for Kirriemuir. After "Thrums" we headed past Glamis Castle and down into Dundee for a late but welcome lunch stop at Discovery Point.

With Observation Quiz papers handed in for marking the group was able to enjoy a stress free afternoon, exploring Discovery Point, Dundee's shops, or the Antiques Centre at Abernyte before returning to Perth for the evening function.

A splendid 3 course dinner was enjoyed at the Salutation Hotel, followed by the traditional Chris Stearn devised general knowledge quiz. After this we understood why Chris had left the country!

The weather improved overnight and Sunday was dry, but for a couple of brief showers. A cold wind helped the hot food van to shift plenty of hot soup and burgers.

Visitors were able to examine the rather special P6 brought along by the Rover P6 Owners Club, one of the armoured vehicles used by the Metropolitan Police Diplomatic Protection Squad.

Also on display was a Land Rover Firefly, which had been the works fire truck at the Uniroyal tyre factory at Newbridge.

We were also pleased to welcome our first visitor from across the North Sea, Peter Koster travelled from Holland with his family in their P5B Coupé. One in the eye for the "locals" who think twice about travelling more than 50 miles for a show!

The usual self judging took place during the day, and from the class winners the Car of the Show was selected by the specialist judging team. A full list of award winners can be seen on the linked page.

The standard of cars entered this year made the judging very difficult, so many cars were of such high quality. Congratulations to all concerned.
