Anchored in the Knock Deep, the Mi Amigo was the Caroline of the 60's, 70's & just made it into the 80's. The Boats mast ( base insulated 1/4 wave ) could be seen from Clacton seafront. The output power started at 10kw, increased to 25kw & ended up around 7kw. But Caroline was always a Super signal in the S.E. of England.
The Boat suffered from many holes in the engine room. These were blocked with small sticks of wood, with a blob of Concrete on top
When the boat hit a sand bank, all the sticks of wood were pushed out of the engine room floor. This helped in sinking the Lady, but the mast remained clearly visable for many years afterwards. ( Boat sank 19th March 1980 )
A collection of newspaper clips, the day after Radio Caroline Sunk in the North Sea
The boat had a few near misses before, when the anchor snapped. The Mi Amigo ended up on the beach at Frinton, but luckerly was not damaged.
