Bold

Your word processor and printer will have the facility to print text in bold type. This is done by putting more ink on the paper, and slightly increasing the width of the letters.

Bold type should be used for headings in preference to underlining, and is also effective in emphasising individual words in the middle of a paragraph. By picking out key words and phrases in this way you can make it easy for the reader to get the gist of a document, or pick out a section that interests him.

Note that because bold print is slightly wider than normal, changing to bold may affect the layout of your document.
