Sir Robert Walpole, usually regarded as the first Prime Minister, served from 3rd April 1721 to 8th February 1742, a total duration of 20 years 10 months.
Some experts date Sir Robert's effective control of the cabinet from 15th May 1730, when his brother-in-law Lord Townshend retired as Secretary-of-State to devote the rest of his life to turnip farming.
