All this was done cos I'm going to be club circuit "racing" the car (actually sprints where 3-4 cars do 1 or 2 laps of a circuit starting 10 seconds apart, so if you go off it's your fault, not like BTCC!!). I built the engine (my first) which is a bored/stroked 350 SBC (now 383ci), with Dart II Sportsman aluminium heads, roller lifters and rockers, Moroso dry sump pump (dry sumped to get the engine low). The parts were suggested by ace engine builder Steve Napier and were chosen to produce 400-450bhp. Other parts include a Richmond (Doug Nash) 5 speed and a set of AP air jacks, needed because the car's so low. Connect an air bottle to the car and it virtually jumps up 12 inches! Can't wait to do that at the traffic lights...
Onto the bodywork, and this is where most of the time has been spent! I've made the rear wings and running boards part of the body and smoothed the joins, created a new floor, with integral rear seat, tubs, boot, etc from 'glass (no wood in this car - my pet hate). The body has been 'glassed to a roll cage I built, so the doors hinge and latch onto metal, not 'glass. The front end is a flip front that has been modified extensively - the wheelbase is 4" longer, the front of the wings brought forward 12", the headlights 8", new grille shape, etc. I'm using Mercedes E Class quad headlights (those new oval ones) which aren't shown in this old picture. Oh, and there's going to be a roof! All the 'glass work was done by me and my mate Glen Campbell (yes, really) - I'm in charge of making the formers in the shape I want and general 'glassing, he makes the moulds and the fancy bits.
There's been a new wife, two new kids and two new houses since I started this, so I don't think I'm doing too bad to get this done in nearly four years! There's a big push to get the bodywork done over the next 6 months, so maybe 1998?........."
