    Holy Basil Ocimum sanctum Linn

  1. 1/30/02 Ocimum Sanctum--Holy Basil July 18, 2001, 12:19 p.m. EDT AN ANTI-OXIDANT, ANTI-INFLAMMATORY HERB Research has documented that Holy Basil or Ocimim sanctum acts as an anti-oxidant and decreases stress hormones. It is a powerful anti-inflammatory with effectiveness similar to aspirin and ibuprofen. Unlike aspirin and ibuprofen it is not irritating to the stomach and in fact, it has properties that help to prevent ulcers caused by these drugs. CANCER PROTECTION AND MORE -- INCLUDING DIABETES Ocimum sanctum's benefits don't stop there. Its also been found to help prevent cancer and decrease cholesterol. Some types of diabetes mellitus especially non-insulin dependent (NIDDM) are benefited by Ocimum sanctum's ability to reduce blood glucose levels and protect the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin from damage. In a randomized, placebo controlled, cross over single blinded trial published in 1996 patients with NIDDM had a significant decrease in fasting and after meals blood glucose levels with holy basil. One of the more impressive findings is Ocimum sanctum's ability to protect tissue from the damaging effects of radiation

  2. 1/30/02 Effect of Ocimum sanctum fixed oil on blood pressure, blood clotting time and pentobarbitone-induced sleeping time J Ethnopharmacol 2001 Dec;78(2-3):139-43 PMID: 11694358 Ocimum sanctum fixed oil produced hypotensive effect in anaesthetised dog, which seems to be due to its peripheral vasodilatory action. The oil increased blood-clotting time and percentage increase was comparable to aspirin and could be due to inhibition of platelet aggregation. The oil also increased pentobarbitone-induced sleeping time in rats indicating probable inhibitory effect of oil towards cytochromic enzyme responsible for hepatic metabolism of pentobarbitone

  3. 1/30/02 Evaluation of anti-hyperglycemic and hypoglycemic effect of Trigonella foenum-graecum Linn, Ocimum sanctum Linn and Pterocarpus marsupium Linn in normal and alloxanized diabetic rats J Ethnopharmacol 2002 Feb;79(1):95-100 PMID: 11744301 The hypoglycemic effect of the aqueous (Aq) extract of the bark of Pterocarpus marsupium (PM) and alcoholic (Alc) extract of seeds of Trigonella foenum-graecum (FG) and leaves of Ocimum sanctum (OS) was investigated in both normal and alloxan-induced diabetic rats significantly lowered the blood glucose in alloxan diabetic rats In addition, the extract also showed a favorable effect on glucose disposition in glucose fed hyperglycemic rats.

  4. 1/30/02 Antioxidant and cyclooxygenase inhibitory phenolic compounds from Ocimum sanctum Linn. Phytomedicine 2000 Mar;7(1):7-13 PMID: 10782484 Anti-inflammatory activity or cyclooxygenase inhibitory activity of these compounds were observed The activities of compounds 1-6 were comparable to ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin at 10-, 10-, and 1000-microM concentrations, respectively. These results support traditional uses of O. sanctum and identify the compounds responsible.

  5. 1/30/02 Evaluation of the gastric antiulcer activity of fixed oil of Ocimum sanctum (Holy Basil). J Ethnopharmacol 1999 Apr;65(1):13-9 PMID: 10350365 The fixed oil of Ocimum sanctum L. (Labiatae) was found to possess significant antiulcer activity against aspirin-, indomethacin-, alcohol-, histamine-, reserpine-, serotonin- and stress-induced ulceration in experimental animal models. Significant inhibition was also observed in gastric secretion and aspirin-induced gastric ulceration in pylorus ligated rats. The lipoxygenase inhibitory, histamine antagonistic and antisecretory effects of the oil could probably have contributed towards antiulcer activity. O. sanctum fixed oil may be considered to be a drug of natural origin which possesses both anti-inflammatory and antiulcer activity.
