Peninsula’s on the Money: Door County gets prestigious recognition in national publication By CARL MICKELSON Advocate Staff Reporter, Door County Advocate Monday, March 25 through Thursday, March 28, 2002 If you want to know where 10 of North America’s latest great summer vacation destinations are, you need to go buy yourself a copy of Money magazine. If you want to visit one of them, all you need to do is take a step out your front door. That’s because if you live in Door County, Wis., you already reside in what that heavyweight publication has rated one of the most happening resort spots. The "Ten Best Places to Vacation" is the baby brother to Money’s "Ten Best Places to Retire." Both are spinoffs of the daddy of them all – the magazine’s "Ten Best Places to Live" – an honor that Madison won in the mid-1990s. The April edition of the publication, which hit newsstands March 18, listed nine other vacation spots as well, including: Portland, Ore.; Estero Bay, Calif.; Whitefish, Mont.; Heber Valley, Utah; Bisbee, Ariz.; the Finger Lakes region of New York State.; Lewes, Del., Quebec City in Canada; and Ogunquit-York, Maine. Door County is described in the article as "a jealously guarded secret" frequented by "weekenders from Milwaukee and Chicago." Some full-time residents may question how quiet the secret is in the middle of July when it takes two hours to get to Gills Rock. Either way, Karen Raymore, executive director of the Door County Chamber of Commerce, said the county is no stranger to this kind of attention. But tourism leaders here are nonetheless always happy with national exposure because it can be a boon for the local economy. Past articles about the county have appeared in such publications as National Geographic, Midwest Living, Travel and Leisure, and the New York Times.
