What is Link-Line?

Link-Line is a Bulletin Board Service, and Electronic Mail System which may be of use to disabled people and their carers, friends and relatives. Hopefully it will also be of use in raising the awareness of the general public.

Link-Line is run on a computer and is accessed by other computers via the telephone line (at local rates to people within Kirklees). We started on the 22nd of February 1990 when our phone line was installed and until March 1991 ran on a BBC micro.

The machine which Link-Line now runs on is an IBM XT which was given to us by the Chatback project (with funding from the Mactaggart Third Fund) in March 1991, the software was set up by Cliff Jones of the Disabled Data Link Group. Without the help of these people Link-Line would not exist as it does today.

We are part of Fido-Net (An International Network of Amateur Computer Users) which means we have access to national and international discussion groups or Echo areas.

Who are we?

A small group of people interested in the use of electronic communications, some disabled, some not, but all interested in the promotion of the advantages of the use of computers and communications. Most of the information you see on here is from the people who use the system, or that which has be collected by myself.

Accessing Link-Line

You can access Line-Link from any computer connected to a MODEM (the device which connects it to the telephone), most computers can have a MODEM connected to them. You will also need some communications software such as EAZILINK or Windows Terminal for the PC or COMMSTAR for the BBC. Set your software to 8 Bits, No-Parity, (ANSI Emulation is recomended). If you are unsure about software please ask.

We are funded entierly by voluntary contributions from our members.

Stanley Sykes - Link-Line System Administrator - June 1993
