IMPORTANT:

These new files are NOT from SSI. I am an average gamer just like you, who thought I could help improve the unit roster for Pacific General. I seek neither fame nor credit, I just enjoy the satisfaction of sharing this work with others! If for any reasons you have problems with these files, please don't contact SSI, as it's not thier fault, blame me! I'll be more than happy to answer anyone's questions about this unit roster, but please don't bother SSI for the files I've changed! My e-mail address is at the end of this read file.

This patch modifies pre-existing files in your Pacific General "data" subdirectory. Before installing the new equipment list, make sure to back up your entire original PacGen "Data" subdirectory, as this new equipment roster will change many of the files there. If you don't like what's been done with the new equipment, feel free to reload your "Data" subdirectory back into your PacGen directory!

WARNING:
You may install this new E-Roster and immediately resume any saved game you have in progress... however, many of your units may differ in their statistics, as many units have been slightly modified. You have been warned!

If this would annoy you, please finish your current saved game before using this new equipment list!

WHAT IS IN THE NEW EQUIPMENT ROSTER?
THE CHANGES/ENHANCEMENTS INCLUDE:

Complete rework of entire E-Roster's unit-statistics for historically accurate ratings.
Some 1,200 unique units to create your army, navy and air force.

VERSION CONCEPTS... the Evolution of the Armory E-Roster
========================================================

Version 1.x releases of Armory E-Rosters (v1.0 to v1.4):

First release ever of a custom Equipment Roster (E-Roster) for Pacific General in 1997. The 1.x series focused on correcting the severe and major flaws SSI included in the original E-Roster. Severely skewed statistics were all addressed by the 1.x releases; Most of the unit statistical corrections were "borrowed" from the Panzer General 1 (PG1) database. 141 new units were added, especially missing units that portrayed a large role in the war but were not included in SSI's E-Roster.

***

Version 2.x releases of Armory E-Rosters (v2.0 to v2.96):

First appearing in 1998 as a companion to the release of the Z-Plan campaign, this is where the Armory E-Roster established most of the standardized formulas still in use today (especially naval and aircraft). The PG1-style statistics of the 1.x releases were abandoned in favor of "proper" research and statistical formulas, all of which were applied in the 2.x series. With a solid standardized database, the addition of 151 all-new units was made possible during the 2.x series reign. The large number of new units to major and minor countries alike allowed for large numbers of custom scenarios and campaigns to be created. Most of the "classic" custom work for PacGen was done using the 2.x releases. As the 2.x series closed-out, it's final contribution was the option to install a complete unit glossary, something PacGen had been missing for years.

***

Version 3.x releases of Armory E-Rosters (v3.0 to v3.21):

First appearing in the summer of 2003, the highlight of the 3.x series featured completely new unit-icon repackaging. Well over 300 new and/or improved unit-icons found it's way into the 3.x releases. Due to the ability to add all-new icons, equipment not previously included in prior releases (without a believable icon) were now suddenly possible. 23 new units were added as a result, including all-new classes of units; Seaplanes and Naval Mines. Special thanks to Jawn Henry and Radovan Nesic for their contribution of icons in the 3.x series and to Carl Johan Ankerstjerne for his programs that made the addition and distribution of new icons possible.

***

Version 4.x releases of Armory E-Rosters (v4.0 to present):

Initially released as a "Christmas Present" in 2003, the 4.x series further exploited new concepts by adding long-overdue nations to the force-pool available in PacGen. Republican Spain, Hungary, Belgium, the Netherlands, Turkey, Czechoslovakia and the Balkan states of Greece & Yugoslavia were made available in the 4.x series. To go along with these new nations, 110 new units and over 100 new icons have been added to date. One of the longest awaited problems from the SSI E-Roster was finally corrected... coastal forts now fire on enemy ships!

Currently, the Armory E-Roster has added roughly 416 units over SSI's E-Roster, multiple new nations, hundreds of new uniticons, new classes of units & has corrected countless unit statistics for better balanced/realistic gameplay.

IN CASE YOU'RE WONDERING:

I'm a big-time student of WWII history, and have been studying the subject for more than 20 years. I have a large collection of WWII referance material, and thought I could put it to good use on the Pacific General unit roster. I find Pacific General to be a game with a lot of great potential, and with it being the last in SSI's five-star game series, I'm doing my best to contribute to making the Battle Generator a great utility.

If you see anything in this roster that seems missing, or seems in error, feel free to drop me some e-mail, and I'll see about adding it into the roster, or fixing the stats. Alot of time went into working this roster to it's current state, and we are talking about going over well over a thousand units... it can be an eye-strain, so please forgive me if I missed anything, and just let me know what you think!

FOR THE CURIOUS:

Below are some of the "easier" formulas to explain... I'm not going to list the more "technical" attack and defense formulas because they go into a lot more than hard stats (for infantry, it includes quality of basic training and tactical doctrine for instance)... In other cases such as ship defense ratings, more than just the armor belt is factored in, such as compartmentization and quality of the steel used in the manufacturing of the ship in question... however, some of the "simple" formulas are the following:

Tank Speed Ratings:
Top road speed; Kilometers Per Hour (KPH)
1-13=2 / 14-22=3 / 23-36=4 / 37-44=5 / 45-54=6 / 55-80=7 / 81-??=8
Game Speed listed as 'equals'

Tank Speed Ratings:
Top road speed; Miles Per Hour (MPH)
1-8=2 / 9-14=3 / 15-22=4 / 23-27=5 / 28-33=6 / 34-50=7 / 51-??=8
Game Speed listed as 'equals'

Aircraft Speed Ratings:
Miles Per Hour (MPH) top speed at premium altitude
100-150=8 / 151-200=9 / 201-250=10 / 251-300=11 / 301-350=12 / 351-400=13 / 401-450=14 / 451-500=15 / 501-550=16
Game Speed listed as 'equals'

Aircraft Fuel Ratings:
Simple enough, the actual range in miles, which includes drop tanks if commonly used, with the last digit dropped or rounded up. For example:
423 mile range in real life = 42 fuel rating in game
657 mile range in real life = 66 fuel rating in game

Ship Speed Ratings:
Knots of ship at top speed
10-19=3 / 20-23=4 / 24-26=5 / 27-30=6 / 31-33=7 / 34-38=8 / 39<=9
Game speed listed as 'equals'

Ship Fuel Ratings:
Simple enough, the actual range in nautical miles (normally cruising speed), with the last two digits dropped or rounded up (divide by 100), plus 30. For example:
8,000nm range in real life = 110 fuel rating in game (8000/100 = 80+30 = 110)
1,860nm range in real life = 49 fuel rating in game (1860/100 = 18.6 [round to 19] 19+30 = 49)

Carrier Capacity Ratings:
Maximum aircraft carried
1-20=1 / 21-35=2 / 36-50=3 / 51-65=4 / 66-80=5 / 81-100=6 / 101+=7
Game hangar capacity listed as 'equals'

CREDITS:

Of course a lot of credit to the folks at SSI for giving us this great game, and to everyone on CompuServe and the Armory Forum who have given me some idea inputs as to what to change or add to the roster. Thanks to Jawn Henry and Radovan Nesic for their contribution of icons in v3.0 and thanks to Carl Johan Ankerstjerne for his programs that helped make many changes possible! A very special thankyou to Franci Roberto (the official Armory "Programmer") for all his help with making the distribution of the Armory E-Roster to all PacGen fans as easy as a mouse click!
