Word for Windows Comic Book Script Templates

Over the past few years, I've developed a suite of Word for Windows templates to automate the writing of comic book scripts and plots. They were created for my own use, not for sale. I'm making the script templates available here, gratis, for anyone who might want to try them.

To anticipate the most frequently asked question: These templates work only with the English language versions of Word for Windows 6.0, 7.0, and Word 97. They're useless, unfortunately, to users of other word processors, earlier versions of Word, or non-English versions of Word.

SCRIPT95.ZIP and FSCRIPT6.ZIP automate virtually every mechanical task involved in the writing of comic book scripts. Each file also contains extensive, lavishly-illustrated (well, lots of screen shots, anyway) documentation. The major difference between SCRIPT95 and FSCRIPT6 is that the former makes use of Windows 95's long filenames.

Read the installation instructions in the README.TXT file—and PLEASE print out the documentation—before attempting to use the templates!

Remember, I'm a writer, not a programmer, by profession. The time I can devote to supporting these templates is extremely limited. On the other hand, I'm always receptive to comments, suggestions, and bug reports.

These templates are provided free for use by individuals. There's no shareware fee or registration required, but please make a donation in any amount to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund if you find yourself using them regularly.

Script95.ZIP for Word 7.0 and Word 97
This template requires Word 7.0 or Word 97 running under Windows 95. It will not work properly with Word 6.0, regardless of which version of Windows you're running.

Using SCRIPT95 with Word 97:

  1. Copy SCRIPT95.DOT to your Word 97 template directory.

  2. Start Word and open a new file based on the template. Word will automatically convert the template to its new format.

  3. When you save your document or exit Word, the program will ask if you want to save the converted template. Answer "yes."

  4. Then, you'll be asked if you want to save it as a new file. Answer "New File" and give the template a different filename. (It can be anything you want, but SCRIPT97.DOT wouldn't be totally inappropriate.)
I am working on a new version of the template, a hybrid VBA-WordBasic kludge, with several new features—including the ability to pick character names from a list rather than typing the name or an AutoText code—but it's still a few weeks away from completion. Check back periodically for the update.

Fscript6.ZIP for Word 6.x
This template works with Microsoft Word for Windows 6.x running under Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, or Windows 95. It will not work properly with Word 7.0 or Word 97 on any platform. Installation instructions and complete documentation are included in the ZIP file.
