Transmission Tips
- One preventive maintenence item often overlooked , changing the trans fluid. IH recommended changing auto fluid every 20 k and 12k for 3 and 4 speed transmissions. When changing auto fluid always change the filter. There are many extra capacity trans pans on the market for the auto. Scouts using the t-727 can use Fram part# 2697, the kit contains 2 gaskets and a new filter. Also, anyone using oversize tires or tows with their Scout, is strongly urged to use an auxillary trans cooler. The largest cooler you can fit is the rule of thumb. Changing the fluids in your trans auto, or manual is one way to assure long trans life.
- Did you know that the T-727 auto transmissions that are in the
Scout IIs shift pionts are controlled by fliud?
Many tranmissions like the famed turbo 350 shift points are
actuated by vacume. The T-727 shift points are controlled and
adjusted by the auto kickdown.Located in the engine
compartment attached to the throttle linkage. As the venturies
in the carb open up while accellerating, the kicdown rod
pushes back towards
the trans. The small lever gives the trans higher fluid pressure
telling the trans when to shift andhow hard to shift.
If the pressure is not high enough the shift will be too early
and may cause slipping. Also if the pressure is too high the
shift willl be verry late and could damage the trans.
Remember any time you adjust the throttle cable or change carbs
make sure that the down shift linkage is angusted correctly for long
trans life.
