Headers
To my knowledge there are only two companies that still
make headers for the Scouts. Here are some of the
pro's and con's of each brand.
Stans Headers:
Make quality headers for the IH motors.304,345,392
The same headers fit the 152 and 196. These are
top notch headers .I first bought a chrome set 6 years
ago. I chose the chrome for rust protection. Now years later
the chrome is still shiny( constant cleaning) with very little
rust. I think that these headers will probably last 5 more years
before I choose to replace them. The flange is almost a1/4
inch thick and is very well made. One header is installed from
the top, and one from the bottom. You do not need to unbolt
anything. You do need to install a 1" extension to the flange
on the dipstick tube so it will bolt to the hader flange.
a heat shield is not neccessary but is recomended.
I belive that these headers will fit the 800s and 80 Scouts
the frames are very similar.
The only downside of these units is the initial high cost.
A new set runs about $250 for black and $300 for chrome
Hooker Super Competition headers:
Only sold unpainted these are outdated and in my opinoin a
poor design.Hooker has a provision for the hot start problem
associated with headers. Their headers have a tube or runner
that runs outside of the frame. This slips back into the collector
and must be welded in. What happens when you need to
remove the headers for some reason?. The runners seem to be
made from 16 or 18 gauge steel and feels light in comparison
to Stans 14ga .I prefer the Stans headers over the Hooker model
for a few reasons. The Hooker units run about the sam-$250
and just are not as well built. The one tube that runs outside of
the frame and goes back into the collector is prone to leaking.
The flange that goes against the head is much thinner than Stans
version.
