Brake Improvements

Starting in 74, disk brakes came standard. With regular maintenence and a few improvements the disk/drums provide ample stopping power.

Braided stainless steel brake lines

Replace your cracked and dry rotted rubber flexable brake lines
with stainless steel. Here are a few reasons for choosing
stainless steel over rubber lines.
*The stainless steel will never dry rot or crack
* with a smaller inside diameter the caliper will have higher line
 pressure
* Rubber lines expand ever so slightly when the brakes are applied.
The braided lines do not expand wich gives the brakes a much
more firm pedal feel.
* The Stainless will not tear or puncture as easy as rubber lines
* Braided stainless steel lines cost about the same as rubber lines

  Disk Brake Conversion

Scout IIs were first introduced with drum brakes
 and Dana 30 front axles.Dana 30 and Dana 44
axles use the same balljoints and the same taper
tie rod ends.Swaping to disk brakes is a bolt on
swap using components from a later model
Scout. You must change the proportioning valve,
the hard brake line on the front of the frame
and the flexible lines to the new calipers.
Bolt on Dana 44 steering knuckels and the
rest is the same as the late model Scouts.
The drum brake wheels wil not work on the
truck now equippes with disk brakes. The early
wheels are 5.5" and will not clear the calipers.
The wheels starting in 74 are 6" wide for the
calipers.

    Flush your braking system

With the newest Scout on the road being 16 years old the
fluid needs to be flushed. Years of rust, scale and debris
collects in the brake lines inhibiting the sytem to working its
full potential. The easiest way to flush your brake lines is by
opening up the bleeder screws and let gravity do the work.
Keep the brake resivoir full with fresh fluid.Use dot 3 fluid
or better.Repeat this untill you fluid that is coming out is clean.
Expect to use a few containers of new brake fluid. Remember
NEVER use anything on the fasteners or bolts to lubricate the
threads on the brake system except brake fliud. If you do the
fluid will be contaminated and will cause problems.
