Dear Veterinary Surgeon,

There is increasing evidence of sudden death in young salukis aged - between 12 months.and five years. As yet no reason or clear pattern has been found to explain these deaths. Dogs either collapse during exercise or are found dead in their beds.

The Saluki Club is anxious to investigate all these deaths in depth in an effort to pin point the reason.

Please could you carry out a full post mortem on this saluki. I would be grateful for a copy of your finding. In addltion I would ask your cooperation in assisting in-, a standard screening involving bacteriologicaI and histopathology.

I would be grateful if you could send fresh tissues to Shewsbury V.I C., Kendal Road, Harlescott, Shrewsbury, SYL 4HD. These should consist of the following;

l. 3 inches of ileum tied off at each end.
2. A minimum of lcm3 of liver.
3. A minimum of lcm3 of lung
4. A swab taken from the sectioned brain stem (when the head is removed).
5. Optional submission of any enlarged or haemorrhogic lymph nodes.
These should be packed, individually and sent First Class post.
For histopathology select sections about 1cm3 and place in 10
times their own volume of IO°/° formol sallne. If lesions are present
include margin between lession and normal tissue.
The following tissues shouid be selected
1. Liver
2 Lung
3. Heart muscle (ventricle)
4 Tricuspid valves and supporting structures.
5 Hind brain (pons to just behind the obex or the medulla)
6 Any other lesion found at post mortem.

Please submit these tissues to. for the attention of Colin King, Vet Diagnostics, Victoria House, Small Dole, Henfield, West Sussex, BNF OXE. Please mark the utside of the container SALUKI PROJECT.
