Adelaide is a 3-year old blue cream domino. She does not seem to like other dogs, but is happy, healthy, spayed and loves people. Adelaide is seeking an only-dog home.Heavy Hearts…
Keno, a nine-year old afghan, was found wandering on a busy highway in Auburn, California. Keno weighed 95 pounds and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Despite his problems, Mary Dixon of Sacramento adopted him the very day after he arrived. She said she had a dream about him. Unfortunately, Mary Dixon passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. If you are interested in adopting or fostering this lovely-tempered dog, please let me know. He is housebroken and very intelligent, and now weights just 75 pounds. He’s feeling much better these days and has lots of love to share with a special human.Keno & Mary
“Goldilocks” is a delightful one-year old who was surrendered by her owner in Placerville. She went to live with Janet Denney of Reno, Nevada, and resides with rescued afghan hound “Whisper” and many kitties.Donna, Goldilocks & Janet (photo to come)
Rusty’s Afghan Angels
A happy ending finally arrived for Rusty. We were put in touch with her former owner via Steve Tillotson, who has an extensive afghan hound information exchange on the internet. Rusty is ten years old, was unspayed and had a mammary tumor. The tumor was biopsied at the time of the hysterectomy, and was found to be cancerous. The doctor thought it had not metasticized “far” but that Rusty could develop another cancerous mammary tumor in the near future. The outlook seemed most bleak. But miracles do not seem to be in short supply here at A Pryori these days. I met breeder Debbie Peterson of Oregon at the Mensona Kennel Club show in Santa Rosa. She knew of someone looking for a young afghan, a proven and deserving home. I sighed, and told her that currently only Rusty was available. Debbie relayed the information to the prospective home anyway, and PRESTO! Linda Jo Bugbee of Oregon will is now owned by a very happy Rusty. We drove Rusty to beautiful Lowell, Oregon in July! We can’t thank Debbie and Linda enough for opening their hearts to this special girl.Rusty with Foster Mom Donna Silva (photo to come)
Other adoptions through A Pryori: Suzanne McMann of Reno, Nevada, adopted Vlad. Vlad is a finished AKC champion who was not needed by his breeder, but is very much needed and loved by Suzanne. Suzanne also owns Drella, whom she adopted from us several years ago. Mary Caye and Father John Gains adopted Elliot and Angel, both breeder dogs unable to show, but able to run and play and love!A BIG THANK YOU…
to Donna Silva of Nevada City (and her patient husband, Tim) for being the exclusive foster home for Goldie and Rusty! I REALLY couldn’t have done it without you, Donna.
More thanks to Michelle Attaway, who ran an advertisement for Donnie, but found a home instead for Sabina. Sabina was rescued from the Reno shelter by Brigitte Kroll and Catherine Yawn. Sabina is approximately six years old and weighed just 25 pounds when she was rescued. Eight weeks later, Brigitte, Michelle, Kathy, myself and Sabina met with her new family at the Reno show: Kimberly, Andy and Dorrie Crist. Kimberly has also volunteered to foster rescues!Afghan Guardian Angels
We have also been fortunate in the donation department. These donations enable us to keep rescue fiscally fit. We couldn’t have done it without you! Donations were received from:
Afghan Hound Club of America
Rita Connelly
Jon and Gaile Skiles
Marilyn Jennings
Mary Caye and Father John Gains
I might add that all of the above individuals donate heavily to their own rescued hounds! The Heat’s On
Some of you have asked about clipping down your afghan hounds for the summer, particularly older dogs who find it difficult to be groomed. I am reprinting a picture of the “town and country cut”, also called the “clown cut”. The toes themselves are also trimmed short, poodle style, but the long “cuffs” cover the bare toes. With this cut, the afghan hound retains the dignity befitting the “king of dogs”. It also allows the coat to return to its usual splendor more quickly than other cuts. We use a sevenf-blade for the body and a ten on the face. We do not know a groomer in Reno who can do this cut, but will be happy to recommend our local expert to you. You can enjoy a visit to historic Nevada City as well as A Pryori Hounds while your dog goes to the beauty parlor. Cost: $40-60.Donna’s “Zack” in the “Clown Cut” (photo to come)

Taking care of rescue dogs
Is something I do best.
I know because I’ve done it,
And I’ve surely passed the test.
The dogs I’ve bathed, the food I’ve fed,
The vacuuming I’ve done,
And all to watch a frightened soul
Sit dreaming in the sun.
My own dogs I’ve neglected,
But I tell them every day
That I love and cherish each of them
Though a new dog’s come to stay.
I know they understand this,
For in their eyes I see
The love that I have given them
Come shining back at me.
Some people think I’m crazy,
Some others think I’m great.
But very few can understand
What really is at stake.
If I can love and help a dog
To find a better way,
My own life is much richer,
I look forward to each day.
So now you know my secret,
It’s there for all to see,
The love I give, the life I save,
I do it all for me.
“Until man extends the circle of his compassion to all living things, man himself will not find peace.”
Albert SchweitzerMULTIPLE DOG DISORDER
Diagnostic criteria: · poor self-control, usually unable to resist “just one more” · dog food expenses 4x grocery bill · minimum of 2 crates, 1 grooming table in house · have a king-sized bed, but sleep clinging to the edge, allowing dogs maximum room · yard securely fenced, landscaping is outside of fence · isolated rural location · people ask “how many dogs do you have….now?”Heaven’s Afghan Angels
Sadly, heaven is richer in numbers this year, as many of our older rescued hounds crossed the “Rainbow Bridge.” Sandy Richter and John Perkins lost Diva, while Annie and Rich Norris said good-bye to Dasher. Marty Ernser of Alabama lost Abby. Mary Caye and Father John Gains said good-bye to Chia. Suzanne McMann lost her 15-year old Falcon, the light of her life; she had rescued him herself when he was just a youngster. All were rescues, Dasher and Abby being senior citizens besides. We are deeply grateful to their owners for giving these dogs some happy years. Special sympathy to Suzanne McMann on the loss of Draco, a Panda & Percy puppy. We share your sorrow.
“If I have any beliefs about immortality, it is that certain dogs I have known will go to heaven, and very, very few persons.”
