Happy Ending
Sheba is a seven-year old cream female, rescued and fostered by Michelle Attaway of Reno, Nevada. Sheba was dumped over the fence at the shelter in Sacramento in the usual pitiable condition. She had recently had a litter, was matted, and had injured her leg when she was tossed over the fence. Michelle took extra special care with this girl, and also had the task of housebreaking Sheba. Sheba's heartworm treatment was successful. She is also on medication for low thyroid levels. We are happy to report Sheba went to a new home with Iinda and Albert Sanches in Carson City. Linda has wanted an afghan hound for twenty-five years! Glad we could help. Thanks also to Gaile Skiles andJoy-El McBride, who were instrumental in helping Linda locate Sheba.
A Home For Shinayl
Shinay is also a seven-year old female, recently adopted by Rita Connelly of Nevada County. Rita devotes her time to making home made dog food for Shinay and her other dog, Patrick. Shinay splits her time between the couch and the great outdoors.Greetings, afghan ownersl My apologies for the late newsletter. I have been in the process of ugh, moving. However, the newly-constructed Afghan Hilton is now fully operatinal-the whole house is a dog house. Tammy Faye Bakker has nothing on us, with only an air-conditioned dog house for her deprived pet.
Many folks are still coping with fleas, and here are some tips to help you free your dogs from these unwanted guests.
1) Bathe regularly, preferably every two weeks. Tea-tree oil and citrus are two natural products that help ward off fleas. You can even mix up your own rinse, using lemon and orange peels steeped in boiling water.
2) Vacuum regularly, particularly under the refrigerator where fleas tend to incubate.
3) Avoid toxic flea dips; afghans have been known to have serious reactions. If you must dip (and sometimes you MUST), consult a veterinarian for the least toxic product. Put the dip in the shampoo; use less than the bottle calls for, and rinse shampoo thoroughly.
4) Pest control companies can spray both inside and outside your home for a severe infestation. The growth-inhibitor hormone is said to be non-toxic to humans.
5) Veterinarian Susan Murphy of Grass Valley recommends the new product, Advantage. It's designed to stay on top of the hair shaft and thus does not act intemally.
Internet Antics
Those with Intemet connections may wish to check out the Afghan Hound Database and Information Exchange. It is run by Steve Tillotson out of England, and contains links to many, many other afghan sites. He publishes a copy of Afghan Daze on the list, and thanks to this effort, we have sold several T-shirts and sets of note cards. His address
is http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/ s_tillotson/menu.htm
If you have trouble, try just searching the net for afghan hound database, or afghan hounds-England.There is a list of afghan owners, breeders, rescuers and judges. You can subscribe to it in a digest form by sending a message to: listserve@saluki.org

Avoid These Medicines
Afghans have been know to have convulsions or ulcerated ears from gentocin, the key ingredient in Otomax, Digitalis can be toxic to afghans, collies and other breeds even in small doses. Your veterinarian is welcome to call me for further information.Anesthetic Agents/Monitoring for Sighthounds
Sighthound breeds have particular characteristics that have to be taken into account when they are to be put under anesthesia. It has been known for many years that any barbiturate anesthetic agents are dangerous and contraindicated in sighthounds, and the deaths associated with the use of these agents have created a cloud of concem regarding all anesthesia in sighthounds. The first step fof a successful procedure begins with a thorough physical examination prior to anesthesia and may include laboratory diagnostics such as blood and urine testing. Other diagnostics may be indicated, such as an ECG, radiographs or ultrasound. The purpose of these tests is to identify underlying conditions that may predispose a patient to complications or an adverse event under anesthesia.
Susan Murphy, DVM, of Grass Valley, Califomia, uses acepromazine and isoflurane. She recommends against using Propofol, a rather new anesthesia for its sometimes severe side effects. VVhile anesthesia is never something to be taken lightly, if the appropriate procedures and drugs are used, the outcome is almost always successful.
Deepest Sympathies
to Joy-El McBride of Carson City upon the loss of her cherished friend, Jasmine, who died suddenly. Annie and Rich Norris have lost Lucy to lung torsion and chylothorax; she was only seven years old. Suzanne McMann had to say good-bye to fourteen year old Falcon. And John Perkins and Sandy Richter are mourning the loss of Kai Chinsky, who also passed away this month. Words ale not enough to console you. Please accept my appreciation for the good care you gave to your furred friends and for writing and calling me.The has but turned a corner.
She is not dead, this friend.
But in the path we mortals tread,
Got some few trifling steps ahead,
and nearer to the end.
So that you, too, once past the bend,
Shall meet again.
She loiters with a backward smile,
till you can overtake.Pictured below: Joy-EI McBride and her beloved Jasmine.
SPECIAL THANKS...
To Brady Pryor, my ex-husband, who is still a member of the Board of Directors of A Pryori. It was he who rescued Shinay and donated $375 to help nurse her back to health. To Donna Silva, also a member of the Board of Directors and a devoted foster mom.
To Michelle Attaway, another devoted foster mom (see Sheba, above).
I couldn't have done it without all of you!
Bathing Tips
Donna Silva has asked me to remind you all of some grooming tips that make life MUCH easier. She had been using Sho-Sheen to rinse her beautiful afghan Zack, but found his hair matting constantly and had problems with his white hair yellowing. Since she invested in a half-gallon of Mr. Crystal cream rinse, she has reported that all difficulties have disappearedl He sheds dirt easily and his white foot is now sparkling clean. Good quality shampoos, cream rinse and Sho- Sheen are valuable tools for grooming your dogs. It's a challenge to keep those coats long and silkyCan You Help?
