Warren Cook, the official show photographer for the Monterey show, has generously offered a free 4x5 of the picture he took of our entire Parade of Rescue Dogs.I've seen the shot, and it's wonderful. I'm sure larger sizes are available at a modest charge. You may write Warren at P.O. Box 700, Aptos, CA 95001-0700, or call at 408- 688-7508. Fax orders: 408-688-7512.
Warren has been a staunch and vocal supporter of A Pryori AHR, Inc., for years. There was a time, in fact, when he was the only light in the wilderness of canine personalities and politics. Our heartfelt thanks- and Warren, I'll buy you a beer anytime...
Monterey Bay Afghan Hound Club
Welcomes Rescued DogsThe entire experience was wonderfult If you're receiving this newsletter for the first time, here's the scoop. The Monterey Bay Afghan Hound Club (hereinafter referred to as MBAHC) holds what's called a "Specialty" each year. This is an American Kennel Club sanctioned-show for afghans only. Some of the most beautiful show dogs in the country were present.
And thanks to MBAHC offering what we believe is the first Parade of Rescue Dogs in the West, some of the most-loved Afghans in the country were also present. In catalog order, those attending were: Jon and Gaile Skiles, owned by Dominique; Donna Silva, owned by Zack; Betty Miller and her sister Norma, accompanied by Mssrs. Cowboy and King, Priscilla Wright and her three rescued hounds, Shenandoah Steamboat, Summerwind's Fire Behind Flame and Summerwind Point of View, Suzanne McMann was handled by A Pryori's Second Chance and Falcon and Joann King was beautifully presented by the fifteen-year old "Sheena".
These wonderful teams traveled to Monterey from as far away as Los Angeles, Nevada and even Tacoma, Washington.
Summerwind's Rosemary Sutton is a well- known breeder who took back two of the dogs when their owners were unable to care for them. She also showed one in the Parade of Rescues. Mark Burheart handled his special friend Olympia (Fire Behind Flame) for Priscilla.
So many thank-yous are in order, I don't know where to start.
First of all, thank you to Mary Voss, the Show Secretary of the MBAHC, who organized the entire show and made certain to include the Parade of Rescue dogs. Mary and I first connected during the rescue of Alli, and later cooperated with foster mom Ann Sterner and the entire club in finding a home for Dominique.
Next, we'd especially like to thank Paul Lepiane and Fran Reisman of the Afghan Hound Review. They drove up from Santa Barbara and Paul personally narrated the parade. It was quite a honor.
Our gratitude to Robin Vasquez for presenting the gold-printed rosettes to our lovely "winners". We also appreciate her donations of art work to the rescue booth. Each rosette, by the way, had the dogs name on it, another special touch from the Monterey Club.
More thanks and appreciation to Mike Dunham and Richard Souza of the incomparable Coastwind kennels for the cash donation.
Priscilla Wright is thanked again for her contributions of sweatshirts to the rescue booth.
Thanks to everyone who purchased t-shirts, snoods and liver brownies, as well...
And finally, thanks to all of you who attended with your rescued hounds, making this an unforgettable event. Here's a picture of Jon and Gaile Skiles' little - girl. She is, Gaile tells us, growing happier and more secure every day. Welcome to the afghan farnily!

Lure Coursing
The Monterey Bay Afghan Hound Club invites all afghans, including rescued hounds, to a lure-coursing event on December 7. It will probably be held in Tracy. Rescued dogs can be entered, but for exact requirements, or to receive a premium, please call Mary Voss at 408-726-3255.
T-Shirts, Sweat Shirts, Souvenirs
Rescue t-shirts are still available for $11 plus shipping and handling. There is one fabulous sweatshirt from Priscilla with a sports logo stating, "The Afghan Hound Spending Team," embroidered and embellished with gold...$30 for this gem. Afghan notecards are available, drawn by Robin Vasquez, $8 per package.
Here's Zack!
Zack made quite an impression at the show. Many breeders were wondering how such a fine dog ended up abandoned. We don't know either, but he's got love now
Afghan Tales
John Perkins tells tails on afghan owner (slave?) Sandy Richter. Apparently, the two were about to eat dinner when Sandy spied the June edition of Afghan Daze. According to John, Sandy was so excited that he read the issue cover to cover. During this time, Sandy's dinner was getting cold. While Sandy was reading the part about Alli the afghan stealing everything off her owner's countertops, Diva the afghan ate Sandy's dinner...
