1997-1998 Curling Season

23-Mar-98: Sadly, the 1997-1998 Canadian Club curling season came to close tonight. Two three-on-three matches were contested using the "Davis Shuffle" so that everyone got a chance to direct the action from the other end. Following the games, the cash box was closed and the traditional "Everything Must Go" ceremony was celebrated at the bar. Post-curling discussions ranged from a Grand Cayman story to hunting wives in Moscow to next year's curling. Thank you all for curling this past season and we hope to see you at the Annual Meeting....

16-Mar-98: Thanks to the presence of TCC's Peggy, David and Cathy, we were able to contest two matches tonight. Both were close, well-fought games. Dan debuted the new, very stylish Centennial Curling pins, which are available from him for a nominal fee. Next week is it for the season :(

9-Mar-98: Ah, yes. The Hatfield was contested today. The results for this prestigous event are posted (oddly enough) on the Results Page. Following the curling contests, Sweets and Savories were provided upstairs. Popular choices included BBQ ribs, shrimp cocktail, brownies and guac (but not all together). According to sources, The Hatfield Trophy was lifted in the Gardner Museum Heist so The Canadian Club Curling Shield was un-retired and was presented to the captain (Dan) of winning Club. In a stroke of good luck for the Canadian Clubbers, The Country Club is keeping ice through March 28th and has graciously allowed us one more week of curling. Make a note of this: The last night for curling is now March 23rd.

2-Mar-98: Three matches were contested today and the Drawmaster did a much better job of evening the sides. Sheet 1 played to a tie (a fine Canadian Club tradition) and Sheets 2 and 3 were almost ties. We welcomed two potential curlers, Alex and Jennifer, who showed great promise. In other news, The Hatfield Challenge will begin at 6:00 pm on March 9th. Space is limited, so if you have not already signed up please call me or Dan. Also, remember that Broomstones is hosting a Friendly on March 14th (see Dan if you are interested).

23-Feb-98: The last minute arrival of Karen C. saved the day by bumping the number to eighteen, allowing for three three-on-three games (seventeen just doens't work). The drawmaster didn't quite get it, as the three matches were not terribly close. Oh well. The Hatfield will be held on March 9th and there is still room for a few more to sign up. More on that next Monday. Other items to consider: (1) Broomstones is hosting a Friendly on March 14th (see me ifyou are interested) (2) there is a movement afoot to take over the Sports Depot to watch the World Championships in a few weeks. Watch this space for more details.

16-Feb-98: The lucky twelve curlers all got a taste of calling the game as the two sheets employed the "Davis Shuffle". Everyone gets to Skip because after two end the skip moves to lead, the vice skip becomes skip, etc. If its done correctly, by the eighth end the person throwing skips rocks was the lead at the start of the game. Talk about pressure!! On Sheet 1, Sandy rose to the challenge needing to draw the four-foot in the eight end for the win. Bypassing the easier Plan A, Plan B, and Plan C shots, he wicked a corner guard through two opposing stones onto the button for the win. Piece of cake. Dan needed a similar shot on Sheet 2 but his also needed to take out the counter. Missed it by this much.

9-Feb-98: Seventeen is just about the worst number for setting up teams. However, three matches were held tonight as Tim's Stockton group came in for a tune-up before this weekend. Sheet 3 featured the savage amusement of a pairs match. We'll attribute the odd numbered turnout to The Beanpot.

2-Feb-98: Kudos to the Drawmaster this evening as two well-matched games were contested. Davis and Tim took their game down to the last couple of stones in the eighth end. The Parsons team fought back from giving up four in the sixth end (to Bob D) by taking three in the seventh and making Bob throw a great double to win the game. The "Another Country Heard From Department" features Kent returning for the first time in many weeks, curling in fine form. This is also the time of the year when we wish Bon Voyage and safe traveling to Norm and Kay as they begin their westward junket. A guest appearance by the Cheese Queen was also featured this evening.

26-Jan-98: The featured match was a TCC Mixed tune-up with Tim's rink facing off against Norm's rink. Both teams worked the kinks out and should fare well this weekend. The other two sheets featured the return of the long-lost Steve J. and Jim P. And, of course, Stilton is a great cheese to conclude the festivities.

19-Jan-98: Bob Devine's Mixed Playdown team took on some of the Canadian Club's finest over on Sheet 4, as Playdown Weekend approaches. Rick, Tim, Lorraine and Frances led their respective teams into battle on Sheets 2 and 3. On behalf of the CCoB, The Hack wishes the best of luck to Bob and Joslin this weekend!

12-Jan-98: Again, The Canadian Club was host to two playdown teams. Karen Cousins's Ladies's Team battled a strong Doug Carlson-led mixed team on Sheet 3, with Karen drawing the button in the eighth end for the win. On Sheet 4, once everyone had arrived from parts unknown, Bob Devine's Men's Playdown team defeated Dan Dacey's Stockton team. Skips Sue Haigney and Lorraine Waybourne led their teams into battle on Sheet 2, with the rocks rolling favourably for the blue team.

5-Jan-98: In the past, as the competitive curling and playdown season heats up, The Canadian Club has made its ice available to certain teams looking for a little more practice time and games against different opponents. This year is no different. Tonight, the club hosted a very close match match between K. Holewa's Ladies's team and K. Cousins Ladies' Playdown Team, featuring CCoB's-own Joslin. Two other four-on-four matches were contested on Sheets 2 and 3 (Thank you, Jim).

29-Dec-97: Several brand new curlers were introduced to "The Roaring Game" courtesy of the Palmer/Neagle Connection. Hopefully, we have them hooked. Happy New Year to all and we'll see you next year (har, har)

22-Dec-97: The Annual Christmas Party was once again a success with sweeties and snackies supplied by and for the hungry masses. Perhaps even the few pictures will come out. Oh, by the way, we also had some curling. Merry, Merry...

15-Dec-97: Today was the final tuneup before the Christmas Party next week. Remember that eight ends of curling will begin at 7:00pm with sweets and savories to follow. The official Canadian Club Red Pullovers are Eddie Bauers; "Jacket"-style are available for a bit less through REI. E-mail me for more information. Congratulations to the Club for a strong showing at The Greater Boston where the Dacey rink finished runner-up in the Second Event and Davis curled for the winning Schenectady team.

08-Dec-97: The Canadian Club Red Fleece Pullovers made their debut appearance today. Beware of the Dreaded Red Shed!! The Greater Boston Mens International Bonspiel is this weekend at Broomstone; good luck to all curlers!

01-Dec-97: Matches were contested on two sheets today with curlers opting for The Roaring Game instead of more turkey sandwiches and turkey soup and turkey chili and turkey fritters and... Be sure to check out the Bonspiel Section to find an event in which to represent the Canadian Club. Good Luck to those curling in Nashua this weekend!

24-Nov-97: A small (but determined) group of fifteen showed their curling talents on two sheets today. On Sheet 2, Bob D. and crew edged-out Davis's team with the game coming down to the last rock. The game on Sheet 3 wasn't quite as close as Rick's foursome was able to get a couple of big ends against Dan's threesome. Happy Thanksgiving to all! [PBU: All gone. Thanks, Jackie!]

23-Nov-97: The Country Club hosted the Canadian Club, Nashua, and Winchester Curling Clubs to a Mixed Friendly event. The Good Guys won two games handily and narrowly lost the third with a strong Nashua team taking the game with the last shot. Social libations and a nice dinner followed the games. Thanks to the Childs, Austins and TCC for bringing the event together.

17-Nov-97: A fine showing again this week, only two curlers short of a four-sheet night. Again the Drawmaster did a fine job matching teams. [Pumpkin Beer Update: One bottle is still available.]

10-Nov-97: A strong turnout tonight, with the Club threatening to need all four sheets. Thanks to the Drawmasters, all matches were very close. Congratulations to the Yetman's and the newest Canadian Club junior-curler-to-be, Hailey!!

3-Nov-97: The 1997-1998 curling season will began yesterday with games on three sheets. The Canadian Club is pleased to welcome several new faces and potential members. Visit the Bonspiel Section of this page for a list of upcoming competitions. Sadly, after years of "chevre"-less duty, we must announce the retirement of the Cheese Queen. We hope the newly coronated Cheese Wiz will do as "gouda" job as her predecessor!

Oct-97: Bob Devine starts the Canadian Club tests the waters (albeit frozen ones) of the new curling season, traveling to his old stomping grounds in Saint John. He and three Canadian friends participated in the 48-team Regatta Spiel at the Thistle-Saint Andrews curling club. They won the Ho Jo Trophy.

3-Oct-97: The 1997-1998 curling season will begin on Monday, November 3, 1997 and continue through March 16, 1998. The Hatfield Challenge has been set for Monday, March 9, 1998; the TCC Mixed Friendly is scheduled for Wednesday, February 3, 1998. The Canadian Club is already starting to receive invitations for bonspiels, so let me know if you have a specific event in mind, or would like to browse through the collection.

11-Sep-97: Under the direction of Julie Williams, a small but distinguished group of Canadian Club members ventured west last month, to visit Tanglewood and the summer music students. [Details to follow...]

As mentioned earlier, The Canadian Club of Boston Patches are now available for the first time in many years! The design is the Canadian Club Crest, hand-stitched in a boullion style, and is suitable for blazers, sweaters, framing, etc (and best of all the price is right). Contact the Daceys if you are interested in these most attractive items.

8-Jul-97: The well-attended annual summer meeting was held this past June at The Country Club. After sumptuous hors d'ouvers and dinner, the meeting was called to order. Briefly stated, new officers and directors were installed and the club's scholarship committments were renewed. The Club Tea Service made its first appearance in quite some time and Canadian Club Patches are now available. The Cape Cod Bonspiels (Ladies, Men, and Mixed) were well-represented, by the Canadian Club of Boston, supporting the local curling scene.
