Guiomar Novaes

Her Repertoire

This page covers the repertoire performed in public by Guiomar Novaes throughout her long career. Many other works were performed by her privately but, for many reasons, never included in her recital programs, although some were recorded. The works are listed according to the first date that they were included in one of Mme. Novaes's programs. Most of them remained in her repertoire to the end of her career.

We know that Guiomar Novaes had prepared a long program dedicated to Gottschalk works. The main reason was a recording, commissioned by Vanguard, to celebrate the composer's death centenary. According to Mme. Novaes, the project was not concluded exclusively for reasons never made clear by Vanguard. Among other works, she would have recorded The Banjo, Union, Ricordate, Last Hope, Bamboula.

Concert programs were very unprecise in the 20's, 30's and 40's. Opus numbers were seldom given for works by Chopin; only indications like Nocturne or Étude are mentioned in most of those early programs. Scarlatti's Sonatas were mentioned by their keys, but never by their Longo numbers. We strongly believe that Scarlatti's Pastorale and Capriccio were played in the Tausig transcription, like most pianists of the time also did, but there is no such indication whatsoever. The same applies to Bach's Jesu, joy of man's desiring; although it might be the famous Myra Hess transcription, no such information was mentioned in the programs available.

Ms. Orsini, who did the extensive research work on all the concert activities of Mme. Novaes, could not find many programs of recitals given in smaller American towns.

We are deeply grateful to Ms. Orsini for all her work and information.
