Darwin's black box

Contents:

If I have omitted any good books let me know. I would encourage you to read the reviews at Amazon, they will make you angry, laugh and cry. If a book has 253 reviews and a 3.5 star rating it must be good (e.g. Behe Darwins Black Box) because the creationists give it 5 stars and the evolutionists 1 star.

General

  1. Come, Let Us Reason : An Introduction to Logical Thinking by Norman L. Geisler, Ronald M. Brooks Amazon
  2. Scaling the Secular City : A Defense of Christianity by J. P. Moreland This book is fantastic! Moreland tackles certain issues in a thorough way, which is not attained by any other book I know of. He very clearly lays down all the arguments and all the counterarguments and his conclusions seem inescapable. Here are the chapters: 1 The cosmological argument 2 The design argument 3 God and the argument from mind 4 God and the meaning of life 5 The historicity of the New Testament 6 The resurrection of Jesus 7 Science and Christianity 8 Four final issues Amazon
  3. Not By Chance, by Lee M. Spetner ‘Not By Chance’ is definitely the most objective and rational refutation of Darwinism that I have ever read. The only possible defence from neo-Darwinists and adherents of Richard Dawkins are emotional, faith-soaked hopes that genetic information can be added in such a way that human beings can arise via natural processes alone. This book reveals that such hopes are empty. Materialists must hold that inanimate atoms can accidentally give rise to self-awareness, love and intrinsic value. You want reason and logic? This book reveals that you won't find it with the materialist's view. 'Not By Chance' is a must read. Amazon
  4. Not a Chance : The Myth of Chance in Modern Science and Cosmology by R. C., Jr. Sproul. Not a Chance is Sproul at his best, which is very good. Reference to chance explains nothing, as he shows. But it is an essential factor in the struggles of atheism to appear rational in the face of the world where we live. He shows secularism to be what it now is: a desperate faith
  5. God The Evidence: The Reconciliation of Faith and Reason in a Postsecular World by Patrick Glynn. His thesis is that the scientific discoveries of the past 25 years, especially in the physical sciences, have refuted the idea of a "random universe"-the modern idea that human life was a chance event-in favor of the "anthromorphic principle": the idea that there is an intelligent guiding hand at work. The phrase "anthromorphic principle" was coined by Brandon Carter, a Cambridge University physicist and cosmologist, at a seminal 1973 lecture in Krakow, Poland, where the world's greatest scientific thinkers had gathered to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Copernicus. He argued that the long list of mysterious coincidences inexplicable to students of the origins of the universe share one common denominator: All were necessary for the creation of human life, thus implying a creation by design.
  6. The Science of God : The Convergence of Scientific and Biblical Wisdom by Gerald L. Schroeder
  7. Genesis and the Big Bang : The Discovery of Harmony Between Modern Science and the Bible by Gerald L. Schroeder
  8. Show Me God : What the Message from Space Is Telling Us About God (Wonders, 1) by Fred Heeren, George Smoot
  9. Icons of Evolution: Science or Myth? by Jonathan Wells - Published Oct 2000
  10. The Natural Limits to Biological Change by Lane P. Lester, Raymond G. Bohlin
  11. How Now Shall We Live? by Charles W. Colson, Nancy Pearcey (Contributor). About a third of this book is devoted to origins.
  12. Science and Evolution: Developing a Christian Worldview of Science and Evolution by Charles W. Colson, Nancy Pearcey - contains the origins section from "How Now Shall we Live?"

  10. Mere CreationMere Creation: Science, Faith & Intelligent DesignWilliam A. Dembski, editor InterVarsity Press (Sept., 1998), 448 pp., $24.99 . Nineteen experts trained in mathematics, mechanical engineering, philosophy, astrophysics, ecology, evolutionary biology, and other disciplines challenge the reigning ideology of materialistic naturalism on both scientific and philosophical grounds, as they press their case for a radical thinking of established evolutionary assumptions.Review Amazon

  11. Creation HypothesisThe Creation Hypothesis: Scientific Evidence for an Intelligent Designer, J P Moreland, editor (March 94, 335 pages, $13.99) P.J. Moreland and a panel of scholars examine arguments and evidence from astronomy, physics, bio-chemistry, paleontology, and linguistics as they evaluate the creation hypothesis. Review Amazon
The Methodological Equivalence of Design & Descent: Can there be a Scientific "Theory of Creation"? by Stephen C. Meyer

  12. Intelligent Design : The Bridge Between Science and Theology by William A. Dembski, Michael J. Behe (foreword). Hardcover - 302 pages (November 1999) Amazon Intelligent Design is organized into three parts: the first part gives an introduction to design and shows how modernity--science in the last two centuries--has undermined our intuition of this truth. The second and central part of the book examines "the philosophical and scientific basis for intelligent design." The final part shows how "science and theology relate coherently and how intelligent design establishes the crucial link between the two." This suggests that Dembski is not simply rejecting Darwin and naturalism on fundamentalist or biblical grounds. While grounded in faith, he wishes to show how "God's design is accessible to scientific inquiry." As such, the book should be of interest to all thinking believers. --Doug Thorpe
  13. The Design Inference : Eliminating Chance Through Small Probabilities (Cambridge Studies in Probability, Induction and Decision Theory) by William A. Dembski How can we identify events due to intelligent causes and distinguish them from events due to undirected natural causes? If we lack a causal theory, how can we determine whether an intelligent cause acted? This book presents a reliable method for detecting intelligent causes: the design inference. The design inference uncovers intelligent causes by isolating the key trademark of intelligent causes: specified events of small probability. Just about anything that happens is highly improbable, but when a highly improbable event is also specified (i.e., conforms to an independently given pattern) undirected natural causes lose their explanatory power. Amazon
  14. Darwin's black boxDarwin's Black Box : The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution by Michael J. Behe. Within the biochemistry of living cells, he argues, life is "irreducibly complex." This is the last black box to be opened, the end of the road for science. Faced with complexity at this level, Behe suggests that it can only be the product of "intelligent design." 15. Darwinism Defeated? by Phillip E. Johnson, Michael Behe, Denis O. Lamoureux Paperback - 180 pages (September 1, 1999) Amazon
  16. A Case Against Accident and Self-Organization by Dean L. Overman, Wolfhart Pannenberg. Is it mathematically possible that accidental or chance processes caused the formation of the universe and the first living matter? Are current self-organization scenarios for the formation of the first living matter plausible? Addressing these questions, Overman, a lawyer, reviews the influence of metaphysical assumptions in logical analysis and then discusses evidence from discoveries in molecular biology and physics in the context of mathematical probability. He concludes that accident is not a mathematically possible explanation for the formation of a universe that contains life. Amazon
  17. The Biotic Message - Walter ReMine - In my view this should be required reading by both creationists and evolutionists, it will help you recognise evolutionary dogma and rhetoric for what it is just propaganda. The book focuses on the biological issues. It is not about age, geology, cosmology, floods, or catastrophes. It contains no theology or religious discussion. I highly recommend this book. It reveals the illusions that evolutionists use to propagate their dogma. This should be read by creationists as will as evolutionists.Publisher Book Review order from Amazon

Creation books:

  1. {short description of image}The Right Questions: Truth, Meaning & Public Debate by Phillip E. Johnson, Nancy Pearcey (Oct 2002)
  2. The Wedge of Truth : Splitting the Foundations of Naturalism by Phillip E. Johnson
Review: Phil Johnson's newest book is witty, incredibly insightful, and to the point. In less than two hundred pages, Johnson puts forth a devestating critique of modern materialist science and knowledge while putting forth his own models of each based on empirical investigation and the acknowledgement of personality and information as more fundemental than matter. Johnson points out that as long as chance and law are the only explanations allowed by the scientific elite as answers to the problem of the origin of genetic information, science will continue to spin its wheels in the mud and spin out more hollow just-so stories of how "evolution done it". Only when scientists recognize that complex, specified information is the hallmark of intelligent activity will the life sciences make real progress toward true explanations. A great read for the open minded.
  3. {short description of image}Icons of Evolution: Science or Myth? by Jonathan Wells
  4. Darwin on trialDarwin on Trial by Phillip E. Johnson Paperback - 220 pages 2nd edition (November 1993) Intervarsity Pr. In clear, concise chapters, Johnson offers a casual, reasoned and scientifically sound evaluation of the support for Darwinism--from fossil records to molecular biology. In a new afterword, he responds to his critics and their arguments. "Unquestionably the best critique of Darwinism I have ever read."--Michael Denton, author of Evolution: A Theory in Crisis. 11. Three viewsThree Views on Creation and Evolution (Counterpoints Series) by James Porter Moreland (Editor), John Mark Reynolds (Editor) Paperback - 144 pages (March 1999) Zondervan Publishing House; AmazonThis book consists of essays by proponents of each of the three views (Young Earth Creationism, Old Earth Creationism, and Theistic Evolution) and commentaries by practitioners of four disciplines: Biblical studies, theology, philosophy, and science. The entire discussion is concluded by summaries by Philip Johnson, an advocate of intelligent design, and Richard Bube, an advocate of theistic evolution.

  12. The Origins Solution - An Answer in the Creation-Evolution Debate by Dick Fischer - Paperback (December 1996) C S S Publishing Company; A "must read" for all Bible Believing Christians. Dick Fischer has approached this book with a lot of integrity. Truth is truth. I am a Bible Believing "Born Again" Christian who loves truth. This book presents the truths about our origins from the viewpoint of the scientific community and also integrates these truths with the truth of the Bible (Old Testament and New Testament). Centuries ago well-intentioned believers insisted that the earth was the centre of the universe, that the earth was flat, etc. They used the Bible to support these beliefs. If we stick our heads in the sand and deny very obvious truths we put stumbling blocks in the way of seekers. If people can't trust us on matters proven by archeology, carbon-dating, fossil records, etc. Then why should they be convinced that they can trust us on the more important matters of redemption, salvation, Jesus being the Son of God, etc. Read this book ! It will increase your faith. Author Amazon
  13. Before the first dayBefore the First Day - The Full Story of the Earth's Creation by Leander R. Pimenta (book - young earth) A step by step analysis of what exactly happens when a binary star collapses gives a mechanism for the formation of the Solar System. This mechanism gives good explanations for all the physical features of the Earth, Sun and Moon (and all other planets). The layered structure of the Earth with an iron core, mantle, asthenosphere, lithosphere and atmosphere is also explained as a logical consequence of the collapse of a binary star. Moreover the mechanism explains Biblical events such as the formation and splitting apart of continents, Noah's Flood and the events of the first six days. I believe that for those readers who are able to set aside their preconceptions about accidental Evolution or sudden Divine creation and think instead of intellegent design and construction this book is a must. It is quite unique in its approach, generously illustrated and very readable. Author Amazon
  14. The Myth of Natural Origins: How Science points to divine creation (Tempe, AZ: Ktisis Publishing, 1994) by Ashby L. Camp is a clear, concise, and scientifically credible critique of the notion that natural processes are an adequate explanation for our existence ReviewAmazon
  15. Shattering the Myths of Darwinism by Richard Milton Paperback - 272 pages Reprint edition (July 1997) Inner Traditions Intl Ltd; I have been reading Stephen Jay Gould for years, but started wondering about the sure footing of the arguments for Darwinism. Richard Milton's book is an easy-to-read and understand summary of all the most current scientific findings that completely debunk the fairy tale of evolution. I have especially wanted to present accurate scientific facts to my two children who are very into the natural sciences. This book was written because the author wanted his nine-year old daughter to know the truth. Buy it and buy it as gifts for your friends who are science educators! Amazon. For a more in depth treatment, see Michael Denton.
  16. Evolution : A Theory in Crisis by Michael Denton Paperback 2nd edition (December 1996) Adler & Adler Pub; Denton is clearly a good writer, and is able to convey most of his points clearly; his book raises substantive, new challenges to evolution. Many of his criticisms -- his attacks on standard, well-documented (but misleading) "transitional" forms, for instance -- expose the same factual omissions and logical errors used in most of the standard evolutionist literature. True "free-thinking" and skepticism at work. The "designer labels" found in molecular biology - protein sequence differences, etc. - are especially difficult to dismiss. Amazon
  17. Nature's Destiny : How the Laws of Biology Reveal Purpose in the Universe by Michael Denton Hardcover - 448 pages (July 1998) Free Press; A leading evolutionary thinker, biologist, and medical researcher asks the question: "Could life elsewhere be substantially different from life on Earth?"--and builds a step-by-step argument for human inevitability. 65 illustrations & photos. Over the past twenty years, such physicists as Freeman Dyson, Fred Hoyle, Martin Rees, and Paul Davies have argued that the universe is fine-tuned for carbon-based life. Now, Michael Denton extends their argument all the way from the carbon atom to advanced and complex life forms closely resembling ourselves, showing that our biosphere is central to nature's destiny. Though we may have six-fingered cousins elsewhere, the laws of nature are tuned to reach an endpoint in mankind. Amazon
  18. Refuting Evolution by Jonathan Sarfati, Ken Ham Paperback - 144 pages (June 1999) Master Books; Within the short space of 140-odd pages, this book gives a clear, well-documented summary of the major topics of the creation-evolution controversy, e.g. origin and complexity, the design inference, the essential difference between micro- and macro-evolutionary change vis-a-vis the factual evidence (something evolutionist advocates deliberately gloss over), the religious commitment of evolutionists to naturalistic assumptions, etc. The putative evolution of birds, whales, and humans are given a chapter each. The author effectively marshals the scientific evidence to demonstrate that the frequent claim that evolution is proven beyond reasonable doubt, is baseless. Amazon

  20. The Genesis Flood, J C Whitcomb and H M Morris, Baker Book House. (Classic treatise on subject from creationist view) This is the book that triggered the modern revival in creationism.

Age of the Earth:

  1. The Age of the Earth by G. Brent Dalrymple Paperback (February 1994) Stanford Univ Pr. Dalrymple explains the evidence and logic that have led scientists to conclude that the Earth is four and one-half billion years old. Topics include the history of the universe, long lived radioactive isotopes, the oldest rocks, solar system evidence, and the age of the Milky WayAmazon
  2. Creation and Evolution : Rethinking the Evidence from Science and the Bible by Alan Hayward Paperback (July 1995) Bethany House; The most significant part of the book is the section on the age of the earth where he looks at the young earth arguments and demolishes them quite effectively.Amazon
  3. New LookA New Look at an Old Earth; Resolving the Conclict Between the Bible and Science by Don Stoner Paperback - 224 pages (May 1997) Harvest House Publishers; It's an old earth after all. An excellant, well thought out book that gives, what I believe, to be a far more logical straight forward understanding of the Creation account recorded in Genesis. The author has succeeded in showing how the creation does indeed deomonstrate the incredible glory of God's eternal nature and attributes and how science does not need to be the enemy of Christianity that many have been led to believe it is.Amazon

  4. Creation and TimeCreation and Time: A Biblical and Scientific Perspective on the Creation-Date Controversy. by Hugh, Dr. Ross Paperback - 187 pages (March 1994) Navpress; Dr. Ross has provided empirical scientific and theological data and analyses in support of an old earth. Conservative evangelical Christians who have neither bought into liberalism nor hyper-fundamentalism, will find this book and others by Dr. Ross helpful in appreciating the high degree of intelligent design that Creation manifests. Authentically derived scientific and theological truths should be integrated for a coherent view of reality. The Holy Spirit is the author not only of soteriological truths but all truth. Assuming that radiometric and non-radiometric methods are not off by several orders of magnitude and knowing that "...truth shall spring out of the earth..." (Ps. 85:11), what would be God's agenda for antiquating the earth, giving it the "appearance of age?" Amazon
