The Manuscript Assessment

Why have your manuscript assessed?
Many publishers won't look at unsolicited manuscripts anymore. Instead they require a manuscript to be submitted by an agent, recommended by an established author or be accompanied by a review/recommendation from a manuscript assessor. Many agents also require a recommendation before they will look at a manuscript. You usually only get one chance with an agent or publisher, so it makes sense not to waste this chance. The manuscript should be as polished as possible before you send it anywhere. That's where manuscript assessment comes in. Most writers have very little constructive criticism to help them bring their work up to the best possible standard. A good manuscript assessor will provide this much needed criticism, helping the writer to develop writing techniques and improve the standard of their manuscript.

What will the report contain?
I will provide a thorough analysis of your manuscript, pinpointing any problems with structure,
character, plot, dialogue, pace, tone, grammar, etc. . . . . The analysis will come with suggestions for a redraft and where appropriate some advice on market and submission. I  won't actually submit the work for you but if I believe the manuscript is up to scratch I will provide a reading/review which you can submit to an agent or publisher along with the manuscript.

What should you send?
If you decide to have your manuscript assessed please include a note telling me its genre and any specific concerns you have about it or questions you want answered. Your manuscript should also be accompanied by a cheque or money order and a self addressed/stamped envelope for its return. If you want any further information or would like to discuss the assessment procedure you're welcome to phone for a chat.
