Abstract

In my experiment I tested the flocculation of colloids. The colloid I used in the experiment was clay. The hypothesis was, "What effect does salt have on the flocculation of colloids, and is it needed for flocculation to occur?" In the experiment a clay solution was mixed along with salt water, then with distilled water, and then tap water to prove the hypothesis. By then adding varying amounts of the electrolyte salt to each of the solutions I observed whether they flocculated or not, and if so, how long it took. The conclusion I deduced was that the clay flocculated with the addition of salt. In the test tubes that had no salt, flocculation did not occur. In the test tubes that did have salt, flocculation did occur. This means salt was needed for flocculation to occur, thus proving my hypothesis.
