FreeDict.Com

This site contains an English-Japanese two way on-line dictionary. The dictionary contains over 50,000 entries in each direction. The result of a search is genarally a list of entries that match the search word - each entry contains a list of words that are translations of the search word without any detailed explanation. All the japanese is in romaji so no special browser is reqired.
There is a Windows95 and later version of the dictionary that can be downloaded free ( just over 1MB ). The downloadable program also has a simple rote teaching facility.

JeKai

This dictionary is rather different from the rest. It is an ongoing project to generate a dictionary with detailed definitions and examples of use for the words. Currently there are only a few hundred words listed but people are invited to submit new, or edit existing, entries. The entries are all in kanji ( using Shift-JIS ) so a kanji capable browser is required.
