Asuka Historical Museum

The site contains a virtual museum giving some historical details for the Asuka period ( 552 - 710AD ). There are a lot of site reports and details of tombs together a with a little background history.

This site contains a series of tables listing the major events in each of the historic periods of Japanese history. Although it lacks detail it is very comprehensive and is useful for reference.

Kyoto National Museum

This museum has large web site in English including an educational section aimed at children but with enough serious historic details for adult to learn from it too. There is also a search engine to access detailed descriptions and pictures of thousands of objects in their collection. The images are generally of a high quality.

National Museum of Japanese History

The site for this museum has some pages covering various galleries which contain some historic details. The images tend to be of objects in displays. The site also has a limited "Internet Gallery" with an emphasis on high quality images.

National Science Museum

This site is still under construction and is rather limited. The objects being described are either on a different page or are not shown at all. The images are generally small.

Schauwecker's Guide to Japan's History

This site contains a very good overview of the whole history of Japan. It is broken down by period and also contains some pages on specific topics such as religion. Each page also contains a list of links to other relevant sites.
