Norfolk and Western Line Poles

Norfolk and Western Line Poles The Norfolk and Western Railroad has distinctive line poles along the right-of-way in the Shenandoah Valley. We modified Atlas telephone poles by removing the center cross bar and gluing the bar to a lower position. We shorted the top cross pole, glued an insulator to the top of the pole, and added a standoff bracket above the pole which carried a wire for lighting protection. The three top brown insulators carry electrical power. Two insulators on the lower arm are white and are used for communication wires. Other insulators are green glass and carried signal and occupancy transmissions. The white insulators and the standoff bracket are normally facing away from the track.
