Poor Control-Whose Fault?
An article by Ronald Chusid, D.O. reviewing studies showing that physicians and HMO's are
doing a poor job of treating diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia.
Recent Studies: Reducing Complications with Intensive Treatment
In 1993 the landmark Diabetes Complications and Control Trial was published, showing that
intensive control of blood sugar in Type 1 diabetics reduces the risk of long-term
complications. During the second half of 1998, major studies were published which
contained similar encouraging news for Type 2 diabetics. These studies showed that
intensive medical treatment can reduce complications and improve quality of life

Diabetes Risk Test
One half of diabetics do not realize they have the disease. Take this test from the
American Diabetes Association to determine if you are at high risk.
Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT)
The DCCT is a clinical study conducted from 1983 to 1993 by the National Institute of
Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The study showed that keeping blood
sugar levels as close to normal as possible slows the onset and progression of eye,
kidney, and nerve diseases caused by diabetes.
