After graduating from medical school in 1981, he went through an internship at Garden
City Osteopathic Hospital where training was provided in all areas of medicine. He next
completed a three-year residency program specializing in Internal Medicine at St. Joseph
Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan.
Dr. Chusid has practiced medicine in Muskegon since 1985. He has held positions
including Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Chairman of the Critical Care
Committee at Muskegon General Hospital. He has also been Medical Director of
Soleus Home Care
(formerly First American Home Care and IHS Home Care).
Interests include the use of computers in medicine. Dr. Chusid had an article
published in PC World in 1991 on the use of computer databases for medical research.
Managed Care Magazine has published an article on his use of hand-held computers in health
care. He also contributed to WordPerfect Power Techniques (Que Books, 1989).
(The following is from information provided to new
patients to our office. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 773-3258.)
Office Hours
Appointments are available on Mondays, Tuesday, Thursdays, and Fridays.
Evening appointments are available. There is no fixed closing time as we will remain open
late when necessary to care for the needs of our patients. We believe people should be
seen when they are having problems, and not have to wait days or weeks to be seen.
A receptionist is available to schedule appointments and handle billing questions
during other regular business hours including Wednesdays when we do
not have scheduled appointments.
We know that nobody likes to wait. It is our goal to see you promptly at the time of
your appointment. Unfortunately there is always the risk of falling behind due to an
emergency or because of having to devote more time than was scheduled for certain medical
problems. We will take whatever time is necessary to adequately evaluate and treat the
problems of our patients. Be assured that when it is your turn to be seen, you will
receive the same high quality of health care.
If you are concerned about the possibility of having to wait, you can call the office
before leaving home to better determine what time we will be able to see you.
Your First Appointment
Your first office visit will generally be significantly longer than most office visits
so that we can obtain a complete medical history and perform an initial physical.
Subsequent office calls will usually take less time (and carry a lower charge).
Please bring your insurance cards, and bring all medications you are taking (both
prescription and over-the counter) with you in their original containers.
Location
Our office is located one block north of Apple Avenue near US 31, behind the Oak Avenue
Campus of Mercy General Health Partners (formerly Muskegon General Hospital).
After Hours Calls
Care of our patients is not limited to daytime hours. In case of emergencies after
office hours, Dr. Chusid can be contacted by calling our after hours phone number: (231)
737-5719.
In case of emergencies we advise our patients to go to the Emergency Room at the
Sherman Campus of Mercy General Health Partners (Mercy Hospital). The former Muskegon
General Hospital Emergency Room is currently in operation as an Urgent Care Center.
This number is not to be used to receive prescription refills or for routine
test results. These should be handled during regular office hours.
Insurance Plans
We participate in Medicare, Westshore Health Network, Blue Cross, Blue Cross
PPO, Champus, PPOM, Priority Health, National Provider Network, HRM CarePass, MMPC (Michigan
Medical PC), Physicians Care (ASR), ETHIX Great Lakes, and other health plans. Plans not
specifically mentioned may be included if they contract with Westshore Health Network.
Traditional insurance plans are also welcome.
An internist can both provide general medical care and provide specialized treatment of
more serious medical problems. Internal Medicine specialists receive three years of
advanced training in medical problems of adults, including treatment of:
heart problems such as high blood pressure, chest pain, angina, heart attacks,
heart failure, and treatment of elevated cholesterol
lung problems such as asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema
gastrointestinal problems such as abdominal pain, reflux, and ulcers
neurological problems such as strokes and headaches
hormonal problems such as diabetes and thyroid disease
problems related to aging including osteoporosis and hormone replacement
and many other problems such as allergies, anemia, arthritis,
fibromyalgia, and cancer
screening
We can also care for your other medical problems including performing routine physicals
and handling referrals should they be necessary for problems we do not handle.
Many primary care doctors will care for you in their office, but need to refer you to a
specialist should you require hospitalization. As a specialist in Internal Medicine, Dr.
Chusid is able to care for you both in the office and in the hospital. We feel that a
physician who is familiar with you and your medical history can provide more comprehensive
care for your medical problems before, during, and after any needed hospitalizations.
We prefer to offer preventive care to intervene in potential medical conditions before
they cause you serious problems. Osteopathic education complements the specialty training
in Internal Medicine by stressing the treatment of the whole individual, not just a
specific medical problem. After graduating from medical school, the training of Dr.
Chusid, and many D.O.s, differs from the training of M.D. specialists by including
an internship in all fields of medicine, in addition to three years of specialty training.

To help make medical care more convenient for our patients, we perform many of the
diagnostic tests necessary for comprehensive medical care within our office. Performing
tests in our office often allows us to come to a diagnosis more quickly and then start
treatment.
Services include a laboratory run by fully trained and licensed medical technologists.
As part of our emphasis on providing high quality care, the laboratory is accredited by
the Council on Laboratory Accreditation, and undergoes the same type of proficiency
testing and inspections as hospital and independent laboratories. (If you belong to an HMO
it may be necessary to perform the testing at the laboratory required by your HMO rather
than in our office. We will still draw your blood in our office and arrange for its
delivery to the laboratory used by your HMO. Unfortunately, this will often cause a delay
in receiving your results.)
We can also perform tests on the heart including EKGs and heart monitors, tests
on respiratory function and the amount of oxygen in the blood, tests on circulation, and
tests on nerve damage from diabetes.
