ASCIIcat 8

We're moving from WinHelp to PDF! More and more people are choosing platforms besides Windows, but the main reason for our change is that Microsoft stopped development of WinHelp quite some time back, and they have now dropped all support in their new operating systems. In our quest for platform-independence and future-proofing, most development is moving to OpenOffice.org.

ASCIIcat 8 won't have as many new features as hoped for, because of the enormous task of escaping from WinHelp's proprietary design. The word list has grown by more than 30%, including more definitions. One addition, reciprocity correction for photographic film, was dropped because we are keeping up with these changing digital times. The bad news is that as PDF instead of WinHelp, the new release will be larger, slower, and with less convenient links; there's not much we can do about that.

In many ways the WinHelp version is the ultimate release -- small, very fast, simple navigation -- overall a great way to present reference material. The following describes the final WinHelp release, which will remain available here for now...
