My personal life is filled with my family, friends and personal interests. I have a lovely family and an enjoyable social life. We enjoy the beautiful environment of the village we live in and the pleasure of taking a long walk through the woods. We both enjoy European and other countries and their culture to go on holiday and last but not least I really like gueuze as a beautiful example of the great Belgian beer brewing tradition.
I am interested in the development of (biomedical) science and technology and their impact on human society. My hobbies are philosophy, Flemish, English, French and German literature, music, art, cycling and swimming. I like the woodcuts of Frans Masereel and Albrecht Duerer, I admire their ability to express so much with so little.
Recently I started studying my pedigree, which already brought me back to Roosendaal in the Netherlands in the 16th century. My great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather was Gomaris or Gommarus Lenaerts or Commer van Osta, born ± 1575 in Roosendaal, the Nederlands. He was a son of Leonardus van Osta or Lenaert Antonissen van Osta (born ± 1550) and Maria Lamberti. My ancestors lived nearby Roosendaal until the early 19th century, when they moved to Belgium.
I am an MD, who also studied biochemistry, because I wanted to understand more about the
basic biomedical processes of human life in health and disease. Nature manages complex processes in a way which is largely still beyond
our comprehension and we still have a hard time dealing with biological complexity.
With knowledge and professional experience ranging from genomics to
physiology it gives me an advantage in understanding and dealing with complex (multilevel) biomedical and (bio-)technological problems
and processes. I started my career as a lab scientist, but later moved to technology- and process development.
I am now working on process improvement in healthcare and pharma combined with technology development.
My professional interest is in developing (and using) technology to improve the biomedical research process,
drug discovery and development and medicine. I am interested in both the
process of biomedical technology development (organization, management, process approach)
as well as the more technical aspects. A R&D organization has to understand both aspects when developing biomedical
technology, the process and its content, to be successful. My resume
is available online for those interested in learning more about what I am doing professionally.
Besides my interests in (bio-)medicine, drug discovery and development, biomedical imaging technology, software engineering for science and drug discovery and development, I am also interested in the advanced use of computer-based technology in biomedical research. One of my personal interests since 1992 is Linux, which makes a great operating system and a powerful tool for scientific research. However for me the computer is the means, not the goal of my work. Technology is the means, improving the biomedical research process and medicine is the goal
