Navigation tips.
The Navigation Menu
The full Navigation Menu looks like the one above left
At the foot of the page, and at the end of major sections on longer pages such as this one, is a 'Page Top' link which returns you to the menu.
For quick and easy navigation, the pages are structured so that any entry can be accessed from the Home Page via usually no more than three links.
The Navigation Menu will:
- Take you to the bottom of the page (often this will show all the text following a picture)
- Take you back to the appropriate sub-menu (lowest level pages only)
- Return you to the NP Home Page
- Take you to the comprehensive Text Index
- Take you to the Picture Index
- Show you what's new on the latest release
- Take you to this page
If you jump to another entry via an hyperlink within a block of text, you may not know where you are exactly. In this case you can either go back to the NP Home Page or you can use the Back option on the Navigation Bar. Here "Back" refers to pages within the NP site's structure, and does not work like the Back button on your Browser's own Toolbar, which take you to the previous page you browsed. Taking these options also aligns on the lower menu portion of the page, which is designed to save unnecessary scrolling.
"Back" will not appear on every Navigation Menu. Exceptions are:
- The Back option will be missing if the Home Page is the one above it in the hierarchy.
- The NP Home Page obviously does not need the Back or the Home options.
Some hyperlinks are to pages outside thi site. These are indicated by italics e.g.
Come on, George
Links are coloured Yellow.

Browsers & Browser Compatibility.
The pages have been designed to be viewed with a wide range of browsers. They do not contain Frames, but Tables are extensively used, so Netscape 1.22 or higher or Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0 will work best. Browsers without Table handling, such as Lynx or Compuserve's early Spry Mosaic 04.00.08.20, will still display readable table text, but not in such an attractive form.
To obtain a copy of Netscape or other browsers download:

Pictures
Most images are smaller than 12k, and so should download quickly, but if you have a very slow line, switch off your browser's Auto-Load Images Option. Most of the information on this site is text, so you won't lose much content by not seeing the pictures. See the Picture Index for a list of what you may have missed by switching off the Images. You can always re-enable Auto-Load Images if there are particular images listed which looks interesting.
Proxy Servers
You may improve performance by setting up your browser to use a suitable proxy web server. A proxy
web server acts as a central point through which all users making use of it
access the Web. When someone accesses a new Web page the proxy server will fetch the page and retain a local copy of the page which it can then provide more quickly if it's requested again. You will only download a page faster if you have a better connection to the proxy server than the majority of the web sites you access. Tip: if you are a on a Super Janet site use the Hensa proxy server.
