The electrical timing-clock was supplied by F. and T.G.
Mercer
of Eywood Road,
St Albans,
who are still in business. Their 'Giant Chronograph' was used on racecourses in India, Sweden, Australia, and China, but Northolt Park was their only English customer. Its use on other courses was opposed by the Jockey Club.
It was erected in 1934 on the south side of the final straight, just past the winning post, which is to the left of the picture, and in full view of the stands. It was started automatically by releasing any of the starting gates on the course. It stopped when the winning horse broke a ray across the finishing line. Part of the ray transmission equipment can be seen in the left foreground.
Like several other fixtures from Northolt Park, it was moved to the
Hawthorn Hill
course near Maidenhead after the war.
