27 Ibid, Thursday July 19 1888. FATAL BATHING ACCIDENT
TWO YOUNG BOYS DROWNED AT MOYREE
A melancholy affair happened at Moyree, between Tubber and Ruan, on Sunday afternoon, resulting in the deaths of two fine, young, boys, one named Michael Broughan, of Spancilhill, and the other Pat Casey, of Moyree, both farmer's sons, and aged 19 and 18 respectively. It appeared that Broughan came to Moyree that morning on a visit to his grandfather, Mr Daniel Mungovan, and he and Casey, after enjoying themselves for some time bowling with other boys, went to bathe in Moyree river. The only person with them was a brother of Casey, who was too young to venture into deep water. The elder Casey was somewhat a better swimmer than Broughan, who, after a little struggle, succeeded in crossing the river, which at that point is not more than fifteen wide. Young Casey offered to bring his clothes to him across a ford, but Broughan seemed to feel proud of his feat, and said he was able to swim back; he struck out, and when about the middle his strength or courage failed him, and suddenly he was heard shouting for help. Casey went towards him, and caught hold of him as he was just going down; both seemed to lose all presence of mind; Casey let go of Broughan, who sank immediately. Casey struggled to get to the bank but failed, and sank, too, in the presence of his little brother who was so terrified that he threw the clothes into the river towards him in the hope he might catch them and save himself. The bodies were recovered later on in ten feet of water. The double funeral which took place yesterday presented a melancholy and imposing spectacle. It was attended by a number of the Gaelic Athletic Clubs, all wearing the usual insignia of mourning. They carried both coffins shoulder high, first to Blakemount Cemetery, where Casey's remains were deposited in the family burial place; thence the funeral cortege proceeded to the ancient Church of Kilraghtis, where the remains of his companion were laid to rest. The sad affair has cast a gloom over the district, and widespread sympathy is felt for the bereaved families, and deep sorrow for the loss of the unfortunate boys, who met with such a sad end in the very springtide of life.

29 (Telcon 4-Mar-2003 between Patrick Casey-16 and Teenie O'Grady, née Casey-33). In a telcon on 4-Mar-2003 Teenie O'Grady, née Casey-33 said that Mary Casey-25 emigrated to the US but returned to Moyrhee in Tubber to die. Teenie is not sure of the cause of death but she had heard that Mary had had some sort of cough. Mary was buried in the Templenadeirka graveyard.

31 Patrick Casey-16.

32 Narrative Christina (Teenie) Casey-33 30-Jun-03.

33 Patrick A Casey-16 (Telcon with Teenie.) In a telcon Teenie related that she had an uncle Willy and an uncle Michael. Uncle Willy (William) emigrated to the US, lived in the Boston area, and either married an Emery or married into a family of sandpaper (emery paper) manufacturers. She learned of his marriage and residence one day when calling on the Howard family in Carrowcraheen. The Howards had visitors from the US, including a Mrs Mary Koumjian, née Howard, from the Boston area. Being a Howard and thereby related to the Caseys, Mary Koumjian had become acquainted with William Casey there.
. This information suggests that the William Michael Casey-24 previoiusly listed in the database was figment of incorrect transcription. In fact there were two sons of Michael and Honor Casey, William and Michael. If the traditional Irish rules for naming children were used then Michael will have been the third son. The previous information that William married into an Emery family may also have been a misunderstanding: he may have married into a family of Boston-area sandpaper manufacturers which produced emery paper (!).

35 Registrar, District of Corrofin in the Union of Corrofin in the County of Clare.(1879) Birth Register entry reads as follows: Birth registered in the Superintendent Registrar's District of Corrofin, Registrar's District of Corrofin, District of Corrofin in the Union of Corrofin in the County of Clare. Register entry #291. William, male, born 1-Oct-1879 in Shanballa (sic) Kilkeedy, father Michael Casey of Shanballagh (sic), mother Honor Casey (formerly Howard), farmer, informant Michael Casey of Shanbla (sic), registered 15-Dec-1879, registrar (partially legible) Macnamara. This date of birth clashes with the date of christening (13-Aug-1879) given by the Clare Heritage Centre (CHC). The CHC extracted the date from the baptismal registers of the old Civil parish of Kilkeedy which is now known as the Parish of Tubber. Those registers record the baptism of William, child of Michael and Honor Casey on 13-Aug-1879, sponsors James & Minnie O'Connor. That date is clearly legible (confirmed in telcon with Antoinette O'Brien of the CHC 16-May-2003) so there is no transcription error here.
Such incongruities were not uncommon in Irish birth/baptism records at that time, a common reason being that the informant (Michael Casey, the father, in this case) was late in registering the birth (i.e. registered it after the statutory period of grace) and, to avoid the substantial fine, gave an incorrect date of birth which was later than the true one.
Catholic babies in Ireland at that time would be baptised within 2-5 days of their birth, so the true date of birth is probably 2-5 days before the date of baptism, i.e. ca. 10-Aug-1879 in William Casey-24's case.

40 Marriage certificate of Hazel May Emery and William Casey.

41 Patrick Casey-16. In an interview, Christine Casey-33 (aka Teenie) related that Joseph Casey-40 (Teenie's uncle) never married. He served in the army in WW1 in Egypt and was brought back to London - Teenie thinks it was because of wounds - and demobbed. He worked at the GPO in Dublin. In 1951, some time after retiring from the Post Office job, he moved back to Tubber. There he first stayed at Monreagh and then, in 1951, he moved in with the O'Gradys at Blakemount farm and worked there. He developed kidney problems and Teenie nursed him. Dr O'Keefe attended him and had him hospitalised in Ennis. On 25-Feb-1975 he died at St. Joseph's Hospital, Ennis, aged 92 years (precisely: 3 months short of his 93rd birthday).

42 Various (This a ragbag source for all sorts of Casey family reminiscences of unknown provenance and reliability, e.g. chats at family reunions, phone calls.) Joseph Casey lived "well into his nineties".

48 Irish census. Irish census of 1901 lists Robert, a scholar aged 13 years, living with his parents Michael & Honor (Nora) at their house in Shanballysalagh.

49 (Births registered in the District of Corrofin in the Union of Corrofin in the County of Clare, Ireland. Entry # 73.) 50 Irish census. Irish census of 1901 shows that Nora Casey, aged 11, was living with her parents Michael and Honor in Shanballysalagh. From this we can deduce that her year of birth would be around 1890.

51 Phoebe Casey, née Rooney, Casey "Family Register" of births & deaths (see lever arch file). The birthdate given in the family records (27 Jul 1866) correlates well with the birth year ("<1867>") and age (14) given in the 1881 census which was taken on 3-Apr-1881. If the birthdate in the family records is correct, on the 1881 census day Mary would have been 14y 8m old.
