o What is Cron Manager? Cron Manager implements the Cron facility found in UNIX. It will automatically open any Application, Document, Folder, or other file at the exact date and time specified by you. By creating an alias of a file, renaming it with the date and time it should be opened, and moving it into the special Cron Events Folder, Cron Manager will open it for you. It works like the Startup Items folder, only smarter. It works with any file on your Macintosh: if you can double-click to start it, Cron Manager can open it. There are no new user interface concepts to learn. All you need to know is how to create an alias and how to rename a file. o How does it work? Cron Manager is a control panel. Simply place it into your Control Panels folder and restart your Macintosh to create the special Cron Events Folder inside your System Folder. Any files placed in that folder will be opened at the date and time specified in their names. Cron Manager will even create an alias of the Cron Events Folder in the Apple Menu, giving you quick and easy access to all of your Cron entries. o The Cron Manager Window You communicate with Cron Manager through the control panel window. You can create an alias of the Cron Evens Folder in the Apple Menu by choosing the alias option in the control panel. This will let you easily access and modify the Cron entries within the folder. The "Help" button enables you to view on-line help, which shows you how to create a Cron entry by giving you the correct syntax and several examples, including tips and hints on how to use them. Cron Manager can be deactivated by flipping the on/off switch, and, by selecting the desired keys, you can customize the key combination needed to abort Cron Manager from installing itself at system startup. o The Cron Events Folder The Cron Events Folder is a folder inside the System Folder where all Cron entries are stored. Each Cron entry can be either an alias of the file to be opened or the file itself. Below is a list of sample Cron entries with a brief explanation of what each means. 7/4/93 13.00 open folder on July 4th, 1993 at 1:00 PM 9.00 open document every day at 9:00 AM Mon Wed Fri *60 open application every hour on those days 1/-/1994 *240 open document every 4 hours in January of 1994 22.- any minute... demonstrates the use of comments in a Cron entry +120 open document 2 hours after starting your Mac You can designate a Cron entry to open a file at a specific time and date, or you can set Cron entries to engage repeatedly by using a combination of a wildcard character "-" and special repeat characters "+" and "*". You can, for example, use the wildcard character to specify an entire month by substituting the "-" symbol for the day field: 1/-/94 item will be opened every day in January 1994 Or, you can use the "*" symbol to repeat something at a user specified interval: *60 item will be opened every hour The wide range of options in delineating Cron entries gives it great flexibility. Cron Manager requires System 7, but takes very little memory and runs unobtrusively. It is not an application, so it does not appear under the application menu. Nor is it a system extension, so it will not cause INIT conflicts. Until you need it, you will not even know it's there. Cron Manager comes complete with on-line help.
