From the early looks of this encounter the match seemed to be destined for a closer finish than it ended up.
Sharpe & White, for the home team, looked to have improved from their last away encounter at Roger Bullivant by taking the first end against a much improved 1st couple for Barton in the guise of Brown & Gordon-Stables. However, the away pairing got their act together more in 2nd end and won it on the setting, to give a very even start to the match.
Burman & Abeyratne then put the home side in front with a good win over Cheung & Bennett, and this lead was further extended with Cattermole & Barratt winning against Carthy & the encouragingly young 11-year old in the form of Luke Carthy. The match now stood at 5 - 1 to the home side.
However, the away side pulled something back when Brown & Gordon-Stables prevailed in two setted games against Burman & Abeyratne. Score now 5 - 3 to Stretton.
But Stretton then went from strength to strength with all three of the next encounters going ther way, giving them an unassailable 11 - 3 winning position. It was then that Brown & Gordon-Stables won again for the away side, but Sharpe & White finished of a good night for the home team by taking the last 2 ends to give a final score of 13 - 5 in their favour.
As ever a good rapport between both sides - aided by some excellent doughnuts from Tesco's with a variety of delicious fillings ...... especially the toffee ones!!
Best wishes,
Tony Sharpe (Stretton B.C.)

A "white-knuckle" ride of a match, this one ... well, it was for me! Sharpe & White got the away side off to a good start with a win over Smith & Bailey, but then the home side immediately hit back with a strong win for Rookyard and Critchlow over Barratt & Cattermole for Stretton. Match score then at 2 - 2. Burman & Hopley-Dodd (making his first appearance of the season for Stretton) then pushed Stretton ahead again with a steady win over Seabourne & Webster. Score now 4 - 2 to the visitors. Rookyard & Critchlow then pulled out all the stops to beat Sharpe & White, winning the first end convincingly, but then White held Sharpe's lack of form from completely evaporating and hung on in there to halve the encounter. Match score now 5 - 3. Burman & Hopley-Dodd then continued their excellent form by beating Smith & Bailey, to give a comfort zone of 7 - 3. But then Seabourne & Webster put it all back in the balance with a win over Barratt & Cattermole. Score now 7 - 5. Enter the all-conquering Burman & Hopley-Dodd to steady the Stretton ship with a strong performance over Rookyard & Critchlow (Jim not being able to play the 2nd end because of damage to both calf muscles). Score now 9 - 5, and the draw at least secured for Stretton. But if Stretton are to stand a chance of lifting the Men's title this season then a draw was just not good enough! So White & Sharpe attempted to secure the win for them ..... but found Seabourne & Webster in inspired form and could find no consistency at all themselves. The home pair had no trouble at all in despatching the visitors. Match now in the balance at 9 - 7 in favour of Stretton!
The final clash of the night was between the couples for both sides who had not yet managed to win an end for their respective teams, despite much endeavour. A win for the home couple would secure a draw on the night. A drawn encounter for the away couple was all that was needed for a team victory and keep their team's dream of the title alive! And boy, if ever their captain needed a performance from his young "away" couple, it was now! And he got one! Barratt & Cattermole took the 1st and then the 2nd end with a gutsy display of steady play ..... and with it the match by a score of 11 - 7 .... which in a way hides the knife-edge on which this match was precariously balanced for most of the night!
Great value for money. Great entertainment. Great malt loaf, tuna cobs, and chocolate mini-rolls!
Thanx Roger Bullivant .... see you next season!

Mixed Division 1
Home team: Stretton   Games: 10
Away team: Ashby Ivanhoe A   Games: 8
Date: 14- 3-2001 (Card Ref: 232)

The match began in its usual fashion, with the meeting of Tony Sharpe and Fliss Holloway for the home team against the away pairing of Antony Cripwell and Sue Gilliatt ..... and the result was much the same as ever .... a game apiece!
The next encounter saw Andy White and Heather Matthews for Stretton take both games from Pete and Chris Goadby for Ashby. The match looked even more secure for Stretton when they made it 5 - 1 in games after John Burman and Ros White took both games from Pete Molyneux and Mary Jessop.
However, the away side were not to lie down yet and rallied with a good win for Cripwell and Gilliatt over White and Matthews .... the score now 5 - 3. But again the home side responded in the guise of Sharpe and Holloway with an impressive display against Molyneux and Jessop, taking the match score to a comfortable 7 - 3 position.
However, the story was to twist further when the Goadby pairing played some inspired badminton to take both ends from the erstwhile confident-looking Burman and White; the match now at 7 - 5.
The next confrontation edged the home side a little closer to victory with a drawn match between White & Matthews against a gaining-in-confidence couple of Molyneux & Jessop; the match now at 8 - 6.
Cripwell & Gilliatt then set the scene for a dramatic finale by taking both ends from the 'feeling-the-pressure' pairing of Burman & White. The match was now balanced at a tantalizing 8 - 8 in games!
Unfortunately for the visitors ... in the shape of the Goadbys ..... they were to encounter a Fliss Holloway in full cry, never seeming to miss a shot she attempted. The first end was gone in a flash .... game score of 15 - 1 ..... and in the second there was to be no reprieve at all, which ended up with the Stretton pair taking it 15 - 3 in destructive style, and with it the match, 10 games to 8!
Standard "edge-of-the-seat" fayre from these two friendly foes of vast experience and knowledge. The same scoreline next season ..... ? .... who knows!
Lovely atmosphere, as usual between these two sides. We look forward to clashing with you next year, Ashby. Thankyou.

Stretton were looking to avenge their "down-to-the-wire" thrilling encounter, 10 - 8 defeat at the hands of the same opposition just 5 days earlier. And right from the off it looked as if that would be the case.
Tony Sharpe & Fliss Holloway .... carrying on their recent rich vein of form .... swept aside the challenge of Sue Andrews & Matt Seaborn, 15 - 1, 15 - 1.
It was then the turn of Andy White (he of the expensive new Yonex badminton shoes with very questionable black laces!) and Heather Matthews to duel with Marie Brough & Richard Bailey with they did in rather unusual fashion; winning the first end 15 - 5, they then found them selves rapidly 14 - 7 down in the second, but clinched it dramatically by 17 - 16 with some 'edge-of-the-seat' play!
With Stretton now 4 - 0 up, on came John Burman & Ros White for Stretton to lock horns with the 'ever-green' Jim Rookyard and Faye Tunstall (Roger Bullivant's stars of the previous encounter). It promised to be tough ... and it was! Stretton winning the 1st end, but then R.B. hitting back by winning the second with a strong 15 - 4 performance and their first end of the night.
White (sorry ... I'd also forgotten to tell you that he was also playing with what looked like an even "more-expensive-than-his-shoes" racket!) & Matthews then had a titanic struggle with Seaborn & Andrews, just winning both ends by the tightest of margins and giving their side a dominant 7 - 1 position.
Enter Sharpe & Holloway again, who began like greyhounds out of the traps against Rookyard & Tunstall ... with some superb net-play particularly from Fliss ... to go into a rapid 8 - 1 lead; but the experienced and wily opponents were not to be over-awed by this and gradually fought their way back into the fray and patiently won it 15 - 11. But in the 2nd end the home pairing were not to be denied and composed themselves to run out 15 - 7 winners.
Burman & White then gave Stretton at least a draw by halving their match with Bailey & Brough in yet another encounter of contrasting ends; the match now stood at 9 - 3.
The coup-de-gras, so to speak, was delivered in the shape of White & Matthews, who halved their final match against Rookyard & Tunstall .... once again, the pick of the opposition on the night.
Then .... in the manner of the rest of the evening that had preceeded their final encounter .... Burman (who was also playing with a new and expensive-looking racket ... that he kept frowning at when he made an error!) & White succeeded in winning their first end convincingly and lose their 2nd end equally as such, against Seaborn & Andrews!
With the time at past 11.30pm and with little snow-flakes falling outside, Sharpe & Holloway completed a convincing night for Stretton with a win against Bailey & Brough, giving the home team a final victory of 13 - 5.
But as ever between these opponents of long-standing friendships, the evening was characterised by excellent sporting attitudes and and laughs and smiles! (Ohh ... "and also by Tony eating most of the French baguette and pate", Fliss wants noting!) Thanks Roger Bullivant ... waiting for next season already!
Best wishes,
Tony Sharpe (and I bought the bread and pate anyway!!) (S.B.C.)

Although the match was played on St. Valentine's night, this was certainly no 'massacre' of the visitors. In fact the term 'visitors' is a little mis-placed here as Sunnyside were visiting Stretton at Pingle School - the usual 'home' venue for Sunnyside anyway!
It would be fair to say that the match got off to a flying start for Stretton, immediately going into a 2 - 0, then 4 - 0 and then 6 - 0 lead, which was always going to be a mammoth effort for Sunnyside to pull back. The match did have its highlights, one of which was a good, confidence-boosting performance for the young home pairing of Catermole and Barrett, who always play their hearts out and are as keen as mustard .... but whose enthusiasm often leads to their distracted downfall ... but on this night they really performed well and won some good games.
Good to see young Paul Bebbington making a welcome return after quite a lay-off from Stretton's season ... he and John Burman won every one of their encounters this evening.
On this form Stretton can go on to win the Mens 1st Division this year, but it just needs another good win to seal that memorable feat.
Thanks Sunnyside .... see you next season!

Not the classic confrontation that was expected and that is usually characteristic of the clash between these two titans of the higher realms of the mixed world!
Stretton went into a rapid 4 - 0 lead, then on to 5 - 1, then to 6 - 2. Sunnyside then rallied slightly with a good win for John Winfer and Kim Ledger over Andy White and Heather Matthews to make the score 6 - 4. But Tony Sharpe and Fliss Holloway (she was still playing the excellent standard of badminton that characterised her play at the recent mixed tournament) steadied the "home ship" with a battling victory over Graham Haines and Sarah Parker, to widen the margin to 8 - 4.
White and Matthews secured the match win for Stretton with a win against Haines and Parker, followed by a win for Sharpe and Holloway over Abid Hussain and Pam Dennis, to make it 12 - 4. But Winfer and Ledger had the last word for Sunnyside with a good victory against the ... until then ... unbeaten and steady pairing of John Burman and Ros White, to make the final match score 12 - 6 in Stretton's favour.
Excellent atmosphere and sportsmanship, as ever, between these two friendly sides .... but Sunnyside will look for revenge in the future, I'm sure!
Best wishes,

Superb match, thoroughly enjoyed it! Steve says ditto! Emma xxx

The supremacy of Burton still prevails after this night of feverish badminton at Robert Sutton School. Arguably it could have been a very different story had certain things happened or not happened, but life is full of so many "ifs", and to do so would only detract from a well-deserved on-the-night victory for Burton.
Tony Sharpe and Fliss Holloway (usually so together and "up for it" against Burton) were the surprise under-achievers on this night. In their first match they lost a tight first end to Pat Rookyard and John Brett, and then contrived to drop the 2nd end from a position of being 14 - 7 up!
In their match against Rogers and Trow (one which is usually a very close encounter) they realy never came to terms with at all, but having said that, their opponents played very well.
Against Mark Bates and Emma Simpkins they began well in the first end (but it didn't help when Sharpe hadn't realised that the frame of his racket was broken out of all recognition!), yet once again in the 2nd end they were 10 - 2 up (with Emma saying that she was "ready to go home"!) and still lost it!
Having said all that, Andy White and Heather Matthews played very well to get victories in 3 ends, and John Burman and Ros White (suffering with a nasty little head-cold .... bless her little cotton socks!!) also won 2 creditable ends!
So ..... on another night .... when Burton only turn up with 2 couples (and both those couples are either all male or all female which immediately disqualifies them!) then Stretton can look forward to a better result!
Seriously though .... the match is always eagerly awaited by Stretton as they regard Burton as "the benchmark" to be judged against; and on this evidence things give much to be very pleased with.
Thanks to Burton once again for being excellent opponents and good sports. We promise to keep on pushing you as hard as we can for as long as we can!
Best wishes,
Tony Sharpe - Stretton B.C.

Was this a hum-dinger ... or was this a hum-dinger!
Edge of your seat ... nail-biting .... nerve-jangling ..... all the descriptions aptly cover the essence of this terrific encounter at the much-improved floor surface of Pingle Schol, Swadlincote. It had everything!
After game 1 it stood at 1 end apiece; after a sporting and close game 2 it stood at 2 ends apiece; after a superbly tight game 3, daylight seemed to appear for the home team of Stretton when Burman and Rogers took them to a 4 - 2 advantage. After game 4 that advantage still remained in a cracking encounter between Sharpe/Davies for the home team and James/Winfer for the away squad .... making it 5 - 3. After game 5 it was all-square again at 5 apiece with the away pairing of Hooper/Hill proving too strong for the home couple of Catermole/Barrett.
It was 7 - 5 to the home team again after game 6 with another commanding performance by Burman and Rogers. But once again after game 7 it was a case of "as you were" with the match all-square at 7 - 7, with James & Winfer playing well once again. Burman & Rogers then sealed at least a draw for Stretton with another fine performance .... the match score now poised at 9 - 7 in favour of them.
Coming into the last match of the night it looked on the cards that a draw was beckoning because the Stretton pairing of Tony Sharpe (sporting new Nike footwear, bought in the January sales, and using a brand new racket for the first time ...... and playing like a donkey!) with his partner James Davies, were not in good form at all (too much turkey over Xmas?) and their previous opponents this evening were playing very well indeed. They were up against the ferocious-smashing fire-power of the young Rob Hill and John Hooper. In the first end, youth completely blew away experience winning it 15 - 6 and pulling the match score back to 9 - 8. (Sharpe had, by this time, reverted to using his old and trusted racket of 12 years and to wearing his tatty old Aliph shoes ..... with their peculiar smell!) At 6 - 1 up in the final end it looked good for the match draw for the away team, but then amazingly the young Sunnyside couple began to miss with a few of their rifle-like smashes and the home couple just spied a glimmer of hope. The score reached 6 - 6, but then Sunnyside responded again to pull away to a 10 - 6 lead; then another counter by Stretton to 10 - 10 ... and then amazingly they went on to pull away to a seemingly match-winning position of 14 - 10! But it's never over 'til the fat lady sings (as somebody once said!) and Sunnyside levelled with a solid run of 4 points to make it 14 - 14, and even go on to a 1 - 0 lead in the 'setting', called for by the creaking Stretton pairing. After gritting their teeth and getting to two match points by being 2 - 1 up in the 'setting', Stretton contrived to lose both of their serves and hand the initiative back to Sunnyside once again .... but incredulously Sunnyside could not capitalise, and with one final effort Stretton won the setting 3 - 1, and with it the match by 10 ends to 8!
Brilliant match; great atmosphere; superb sportsmanship .... we liked this one - win it or lose it!
By the way, Rob James is already selling tickets for this fixture next season!
Best wishes,
Tony Sharpe (Stretton B.C.)

An interesting encounter between these old foes. Rog. Bul. got away to a 4-0 flying start, then 5-3 and then only 5-7 down 3 matches later; but then Stretton found a rich vein of form and ran out 12-6 winners. Great crack between the 2 teams; pleasure to play as usual.

So... yes it was an 18-0 emphatic win for Stretton... so... this match was everything good about badminton in the East Staffs League; when the match was already at 12-0 in Stretton's favour, still Uttoxeter produced some great battling badminton... still lost... but still smiled!! Thanks Uttoxeter L. Centre... you're a credit to our League!! Tony.
