HP LaserJet II/III "Service 50" Error
(Order # KIT-SXACPS)

Kit Price

Difficulty Level (1=easy, 10=difficult): 6

Fuser : $79

AC Power
Supply: $139

Symptoms: Your HP LaserJet II/III printer displays "Service 50" on the Control Panel. (Note: Turn off your printer for at least 15 minutes when a "Service 50" error occurs. Any power interuption such as a black out or brown out can cause a temporary "Service 50" error.)

Cause: In about 90 percent of the cases, a Service 50 error is caused by a bad Fusing Assembly or AC Power Supply. The other 10 percent is caused by a bad DC Controller, Fuser/AC Cable connection or a combination of the above.

Note: If the Fusing Assembly appears severely burnt (i.e. the Nomex Felt Wand stuck on the Fusing Roller), there is a good chance that you have a bad DC Controller burning out the Fusing Assembly. In this case, the Fusing Assembly will test bad and replacing it with a new Fusing Assembly will burn out the new one. It is probably time for a new printer.

Tools Needed
Workaround: There are no workarounds for this problem.

Kit Description: The kit involves replacing Fusing Assembly or AC Power Supply.

Phillips Scewdriver

Ohm Meter

Instructions: First, check to see if the Fusing Assembly is bad. If the Fusing Assembly is not bad, then chances are the AC Power Supply is bad. (There is no way of checking the AC Power Supply short of installing it in a good printer. So, if your fuser is good, you have to take a chance and order the AC PS and install it. If the new AC PS doesn't solve the "Service 50," you can return it within 30 days--you pay is the shipping & $20 restocking fee.)

Step 1: Remove Fusing Assembly

Step 2: Check Fusing Assembly

If you have access to a good Fusing Assembly (another printer), the easiest way is to switch the Fusing Assembly. Otherwise, use your Ohm-meter to measure the continuity at the points shown below.

(On the left side of Fusing Assembly, remove the black screw and cover to the Exit Sensor PCA board.)

(Note: On the Left side, if the resistance is not about 1 Meg Ohms at room temperature, your PCB & Thermistor Assembly is bad. This rarely happens so a new PCB & Thermistor Assembly is NOT included in our Fuser Kit. You must order it separately--the cost is $30.)
