"VANITY VANITY ALL IS VANITY"

In 1989 the Catalan Design Magazine "ON" (Where) decided to organize an exhibition with the theme "On es el temps?" (Where is Time?)  They selected one hundred artists for inclusion in the show.  Each artist was given an identical white cubical cardboard box with which to create a work of art.  The artist was free to do whatever he wished with the box, treat it in any way, add to it, paint it, destroy it or whatever.  The only limitation was that the final work be expressive of the given theme.

Here is my response to the challenge, created in the tradition of the "Vanitas", my only 3 dimensional work.

The sculpture seen from the front and two sides.  The original, transformed,  white cardboard box is on top forming the "head".  It is closed as are the 2 doors that form the body of the "figure".

The doors are opened revealing the insides.  The "head" on top swivels horizontally 360º.

Inside the "head" a lightbulb, underneath a sponge, flashes on and off.  The inside is lined with images of paper currency.
