If you have links of any kind with the families living in the Cambridge (UK) area who variously spelled the name as Woulfe or Wolfe, and latterly (late 19th century onward) Woolf, contact David Woolf in Norwich, UK, (email below). I can trace this branch of the family back to James Wolfe born in 1818 whose father may have come from Limerick in Ireland. James's son Samuel born 1851 had the surname Woulfe!! He was my great great grandfather. (10/20/04)

Frank is looking for information on his branch of the family. His Grandfather was Michael Woulfe/Wolfe - and his is an interesting story.
Frank theorizes that Michael may have used a little imagination on his application when he joined the Irish constabulary service so he could be posted in his hometown. It seems the service preferred posting officers in areas away from their home so they'd be impartial. It's not the fist official "fib" I've found. My own great grandfather had 2 different birthdates and we don't know why - and my grandfather made a 4 year error in his birthdate when he joined the British army.
Frank says Michael's Irish constabulary records show his birthplace and date as Co. Kerry in 1834...
But - his death certificate in Australia says he was born in Co. Clare in 1830.
Ready for this..??? His children's birth certificates show his birthplace as Co. Limerick - except for the last one which says Co. Kerry!
He was a member of the Royal Irish constabulary from 1853 until 1864 and was stationed in Limerick City. He emigrated to Australia in 1864.
He arrived in Australia between April 1864 and October 1865 and joined the Victoria police.
***Interesting historical note here...This time was the height of the Australian gold rush in Victoria, and many Irish constabulary were recruited to police the rowdy frontier....mw ***
He married Margaret Purcell in Saint Mary's Parish in Limerick City in 1863. He was stationed there at the time.

I don't want you to suddenly get a ton of e-mail from relatives you may really not want to hear from. Again, I promise to ONLY share this stuff with us Woulfes and our families.
