| T
homas Tirino is recognized as a leading authority
and one of the finest interpreters of the music of Ernesto
Lecuona. Tirino's Havana debut in January, 1995 was a
sensation and he was immediately asked to be a member of the piano jury
for the piano competition at the Lecuona International Festival in Havana
the following August. |
|
Concerts by Tirino in the United States, Spain, and
Eastern Europe featuring the music of Ernesto Lecuona have confirmed what
those familiar with this music already know: that one of the great
compositional talents of the century is ripe for re-discovery. And Tirino
has been the major force behind the renaissance. |
| In the fall of 1995, Grammofon
AB BIS, through Qualiton Imports, Ltd., its distributor,
released the first three of six CDs devoted to the complete piano music of
Lecuona as played by Tirino. Hailed by both the public and the critics,
Volume 1 in the series was named by Time Magazine as one of the "Ten Best
Recordings of 1995". |
 |
In
the September 22nd 1995 issue of the Sunday New York
Times, Arts and Leisure section, Mr. Tirino's recordings were
hailed for the scope and the quality of his efforts in bringing this
wonderful music to the public. |
| Particularly impressive about the
Tirino series is the number of pieces by Lecuona receiving their first
recorded performance. Among these are four works for piano and orchestra,
the Rapsodia Negra, the Rapsodia Argentina, the
Rapsodia Cubana, and the Rumba Rapsody. Only the
Rapsodia Negra (in its piano solo version) has been recorded
previously. |

Thanks to Tirino's BIS Lecuona series, the publisher of Lecuona's
music is re-releasing much of composer's music which in recent years had
gone out of print. A handsome new edition,Ernesto
Lecuona, Piano Music containing 44 piano pieces, is
available and, more recently, Placido
Domingo, Always in My Heart, The Songs of Ernesto
Lecuona, a collection of thirteen of the composer's most
popular songs has just been released . Most of this activity has been
generated by Tirino. |
