Circular Breathing
I require all my students to develop their circular breathing skills. Luckily, it's not as hard as some people believe.
- 1. Get an Oreo.
- 2. Hold the Oreo so that one of the round sides is facing you.
- 3. Keeping the plane surface of the side perpendicular to the floor, place it in the front of your mouth, with your lips around the edge.
- 4. Once you have memorized the position of your lips, remove the Oreo. (Save it for a yummy snack.) You will have achieved perfect circularity of the lips, and any breathing you do will be, by definition, circular breathing. This enables you to produce a well rounded tone while breathing, unlike players who get an edgy sound by breathing out of corners of their mouths.
My advanced students like to separate the two wafers of the Oreo. The half with the layer of creme filling on it they use as described above in step 3. Of course, the creme layer is on the inside, but not for long! This method develops perfect circular tonguing.
