Egregio Mendez, whom Sousa referred to as the "Joachim of the Bass Drum," wrote a remarkable transcription of the Ring of the Nibelung for solo bass drum. I have an old recording of this - 15 LP disks! Wotan's Farewell is quite touching. Bruenhilde's Immolation is also effective. However, Mendez inexplicably fails ot use a vibrato in the fourth phrase of the Long Call, so it probably would not meet with Hans Pizka's approval.
Too bad they never made a CD of this. However, I spotted the old LP set at a used record store for only eight dollars! A price like that is hard to beat.
