Unity, ME-- Race #2 of the 1999 NEPSA Tour was held today at Unity Raceway for the first time in a year. A large crowd was on hand to watch 24 of the best Pro Stock drivers in the northeast compete for the $3000 to win feature. Former NEPSA champion and Unity Raceway owner Ralph Nason shattered the old track record of 15.255 with a time of 14.848. Click here for full time trial and heat results.
During heat #3, Travis Benjamin was involved in a very nasty looking crash as they were about to take the green. Benjamin went flying off turn 4, damaging the front of his car severly. The Belfast Variety crew work feverishly the rest of the afternoon to get the car back in shape in time for Travis to start the feature.
By virtue of his win in the first heat, Ralph Nason started on the pole. At the drop of the green Nason took off. No one could touch him. Wiscassett winner Mike Rowe started 11th and by lap 19 had moved his way up to 4th. An accident involving Andy Shaw and Bub Raven on lap 36 blocked the track and brought out the red flag. Shaw was t-boned by Raven, suffering major damage to his Shaw's Auto Sales Chevy. Shaw and Raven were both all right, but were unable to continue.
Nason continued to dominate the rest of the race, with Kenny Wright giving him a good challenge on the restart. However, after a couple of green flag laps, Nason would pull away. Nason would go on to lap all but the top five cars to record his first NEPSA victory of the year. Wright was 2nd, followed by Scott Chubbuck, Steve Nelson, and Chuck Lachance to round out the top 5.
The next race for the NEPSA Tour will be May 22-23 at Autodrome Chicoutimi, in Chicoutimi, PQ. Qualifying will take place on Saturday, with the Molson Ex 150 taking the green at 1:00pm.
