ACT LMS Series

Race #2 - Merchants Bank 150
Airborne Raceway, Plattsburgh, NY, Saturday, May 15, 1999
RACE REPORT by Tom Herzig

Brian Hoar, the defending ACT Late Model Sportsman (LMS) Series Champion, got his three-peat campaign in full swing Saturday night at Airborne International Raceway in Plattsburgh, NY. Hoar took command of the 26th Egglefield Ford Spring Green on lap 29 of the 99 lap contest and held the lead the rest of the way. The victory, Hoar's first of the season, moved him into first place in the ACT LMS Series point standings.

ACT rookie Scott Dragon turned in an outstanding performance as the Spring green runner-up, after having started 28th in the 30 car field. Chris Fisher, battled a loose race car and hung tough at Dragon's heels for third. Fred LaGoy kept Hoar in close range from the halfway point before losing ground to Dragon and Fisher in lapped traffic with ten laps remaining. LaGoy settled for fourth, one car length in front of Eric Williams. Joey Laquerre, Phil Scott, Patrick Laperle, Robin Wood and Billy Herring completed the top ten.

The victory was ACT career win number fifteen for Hoar and the Goss Dodge Team. Hoar quickly improved upon his tenth starting position and engaged early leader Pete Fecteau and Eric Williams in a sensational duel at the front that ended when Williams lost the handle on lap 26 and turned in front of the field. The ensuing scramble knocked Cris Michaud out of the race, sent Joey Laquerre in for a tire and put Williams on the rear. Hoar passed Fecteau three laps later and stayed put by being able to drive deeper into turns one and three at speed than any of his competitors.

Dragon began his remarkable rookie run by advancing steadily to eleventh place from where he benefitted when Chuck Beede, Steve Renaudette and Dave Whitcomb went around on the backstretch trying to attempt to avoid trouble ahead. The lap 43 restart found Dragon in seventh place. Twenty laps later, he wqas at Fisher's door fighting for third behind leaders Hoar and LaGoy. "This is why people race, for moments like this," Dragon said in victory lane.

The ACT Series heads to Thunder Road in Barre, VT Sunday, May 30 for the Mekkelsen RV Memorial Day Classic, then moves to White Mountain Motorsports Park Saturday, June 19 for the Currier RV 100.
