Hello....My name is Scout.

  • I'm a flat-coated retriever. I love dogs, food, and especially play. Whee!
  • I have some very important jobs. My jobs include training my owners to give me treats on command (a sad, hungry, look usually does the job), licking their hands clean, and keeping them amused with my antics.

The Flat-Coated Retriever. What exactly is a flat-coated retriever, you ask? Well, the flatcoat is a dog breed developed in the UK in the 1800s. Most flat-coated retrievers are black, but there are some brown (liver) flatcoats. Most of us weigh between 60 and 80 pounds (25-35 Profile of Scout, a flat-coated retrieverkg.), and we have medium-length straight or wavy fur. The "ideal" flat-coated retriever is described in the breed standard. Flat-coated retrievers are often described as having "power without lumber, and raciness without weediness." This site has lots of pictures and links to other flatcoat sites, so you can learn all about us.

Hunting and Family Dogs. Flat-coated retrievers were originally bred as hunting dogs, and many of us still participate in that activity. My mom and two of my sisters like to hunt, although my "hunting" activities primarily involve chasing the kitties who live with me. Some hunting (and other) photos of my mom, 2 of my sisters, and 1 of my brothers are HERE. We are happy dogs and love people. The busiest part of the typical flat-coated retriever is its wagging tail.

Books about Flat-Coated Retrievers. You can read more about flatcoated retrievers (and dogs in general) in the books listed on my Recommended Reading page. There is also lots of internet information about FCRs on my links page:  "My Favorite Places to Sniff".

Thinking About a Flat-Coated Retriever? If so, look at Is a Flat-Coated Retriever Right for You? to learn more about the breed.

Flat-Coated Retriever Health. I have a list of health and veterinary resources for flat-coated retrievers (and dogs in general) on my Health and Veterinary Resources page. Also a suggested Canine First Aid Kit. Also, some recent information about dog food.

Stop Puppy Mills. How not to buy a dog? Do not buy a dog (of any breed) from a pet store. Pet stores get their dogs from puppy mills. Many ads in the paper are also from puppy mills. Puppy mill dogs have higher incidence of inherited medical disorders, can have serious temperament problems, and come from animals raised in deplorable conditions. Information about  puppy mills can be found at the sites listed HERE. Buy dogs only from reputable breeders who care about their dogs, from purebred rescue organizations, or animal shelters.

FLAT-COATED RETRIEVER LINKS. We have added many links. If you're looking for flat-coated retrievers on the web, you'll probably find them on our links page HERE.
