Evelyn and I were married on 17 August 1994. I proposed to her at the local Snooker Club here in Glenrothes and told her that I had arranged for us to be married in Skourvoula, Crete, and that it would be a Greek Orthodox wedding. I knew a hotel owner in Crete who's father-in-law was a "Papa" (Priest). This hotel owner, Sefi, then became my Godfather so that I was related to a Greek before we could get married in the Orthodox church. Sefi helped with everything and set things up at the "Greek end". |

Skourvoula is a small village in the south of the island and is in the foothills of Mount Idha (Where Zeus the Greek God is fabled to have been born). We were staying at the Hotel Gortys on the Northern Coast of the Island therefore we had to get transport for the trip to Skourvoula. So we hired a jeep. A shiny red Suzuki with lovely interior, immaculate body work and not a lot of miles on the clock. When it came to my "stag night" we went to all the best bars and night clubs in the area and afterwards, persuaded by my best man Alex (pictured below with a mischievous grin), we decided to tour the island in the jeep. |

Alex and Craig and I, had a never to be forgotten time of our life. The three of us went mad in the jeep, going off road into the sea, crashing through olive groves kicking up clouds of dust careering down 60º inclines hurtling up mountain roads screaming until sun came up. |
|
The next day we awoke to go as usual to the beach. When we got to the jeep we found that it was covered in scratches and dinks, the interior had hundreds of olives in it, a 6" nail in one of the tyres and a few hundred miles more on the clock. Luckily, the car-hire people replaced the tyre and cleaned the jeep so that the transport for the wedding was ok. The girls' hen night took place in a club called the Aria, a night-club in Hersonissos not far from the Hotel. |

After an hours drive on the day of the wedding we arrived at Papa Jorges' house in Skourvoula. Before the wedding could start, we needed one last thing, Stefanos. These are two halos joined with silk ribbon and are an important part of the ceremony. We had not brought any with us and Alex had to go and buy them in a town near the village. |

This Page describes the days before the wedding. Evelyn and I were the first non Greeks to be married in the town of Skourvoula and we hope to show how much the wedding has meant to us by publishing it on the Web. |
