Formerly project LOVE. Name was changed because a search on Alta Vista produced 85,000 hits, none of which are related.
The LOw Volume Environment (LOVE), now known as project Fieldweb . Fieldweb is a proposal from the Disaster Relief Communications Foundation and is not yet adopted by any other webmasters. However we will be working on extending the network. Or at least promoting the general concept under another name.
Users in the field have very slow internet access, typically 2.4Kb/s, and often have to pay around 1USD per Kilobyte of data. By contrast, many Web pages have images up to 100K as part of them, making it unattractive to use the WWW to access data in the field, as USD 100 is far to much to pay to see someone's logo.
Many have only Email accounts, but can read webpages via a web robot, which gets the webpage, converts it to an email and sends it to the requester. This is only handy if the webpage is designed for that from the start.
Project Fieldweb plans to clearly label web pages who's webmasters agree to make the page contents low volume, about 1-3K per page, and have as many links per page as possible to avoid having to load a lot of pages to get what the field user needs. There will be no images unless a warning is displayed,
There will be a warning when leaving the LOw Volume Environment area into websites which are not part of the fieldweb system.
