A Pile of Old Stones

You are visitor since 18th Oct 1998

WELCOME to my Stone Circle Pages. I would like to introduce you to some of our local stone circles and symbol stones - basically any pile of old stones that takes my fancy! All of the sites on these pages I have visited. Of course, I cant do real justice to these sites on a web page and I recommend you visit them yourself!

NAVIGATING THESE PAGES - Click on the pink links or buttons at the bottom of the pages to move through the site. The main map shows all the sites included at the moment and click on the white labels to go to the site's page. Once on the page you can see larger versions of the photos by clicking on them and the large map button will take you to a local map of the site location. I have also included a glossary containing some of the terms used here.

STONE CIRCLES - There are 99 probable or certain stone circle sites in the Aberdeenshire area. During the third millennium BC, there developed in the North East of Scotland, a unique type of megalithic monument - the recumbent stone circle. The recumbent stone circle is named for the massive stone laid on its side between two flanking stones. They are said to be positioned to give clear views of the moon rising and setting in the southern sky from within the circle and thus gave local farming folk a way to mark the changing seasons. Good local examples include Loanhead of Daviot and Strichen Stone Circle but most ordinance survey maps mark the lesser known sites too.

SYMBOL STONES - The symbol stones were erected by the Picts between the 4th and 9th centuries and it is thought that they were placed as memorials to prominent people or as grave markers. Around 40% of the two hundred symbols stones found in Scotland are in Aberdeenshire. Good examples of these can be seen near Inverurie - The Maiden Stone, and at the entrance to Woodhill House, Aberdeen - The Rhynie Man.
