Tayside [Not Yet Complete]

The region has many fascinating historical sites.

Arbroath Abbey

Arbroath Abbey

Situated in the town of Arbroath. William the Lion founded this Tironensian monastery in 1178. Substantial parts of the structure still remain. Additional historical significance accrues from the fact that this was the place where the renowned Declaration of Arbroath was signed in 1320. England was determined to absorb Scotland with the tacit acceptance of the Pope. Scottish nobles for once resisted and argued their case vehemently and with such obvious just cause that the Pope changed his mind.

The historic sites mentioned above are all administered by 'Historic Scotland'. This is an organisation which maintains ancient monuments on behalf of the government. A small admission charge is charged at many of the sites (to help pay for the continuing maintenance). Various types of season ticket are available which make charges even more reasonable since once purchased you can visit an unlimited number of sites free of charge. These season tickets are available from sites which charge for admission and have a custodian.
