No nation's history can be adequately dealt with in a few sentences and history in general is far too complex to be usefully discussed in simplified terms. However a few key facts may help visitors more easily to understand some of the references in other areas. These should be taken as 'jumping off points' to further, more comprehensive reading on their respective subjects rather than a proper historical exploration. In addition, there are many common misconceptions about Scottish (and no doubt other countries') history, a few of which I attempt to correct here.
