The 1997 WNYSOMBL draft was held at the St. Francis of Asissi gymnasium on Adam St. in
Tonawanda last Sept. 6. We've drafted just about everywhere; in basements, garages, and
libraries, but this was a new experience. We had the gym for the entire afternoon, and it was a
blast. After eighteen years, this was our first draft with an athletic "feel" to it. There was plenty
of room, so each team could spread out as much as they wanted and not fear rival teams
"stealing" their ratings and secret draft strategies. A good time was had by all, and we'd love to
return next season.

"The Bronx Stukas select Kevin Brown", Stukas manager Rich Vallari
proudly announces. So began yet another losing season in the Bronx.

A stunned Russ Golata finally realizes in the seventh round that he has
selected only one pitcher. He proceeds to take outfielder Dave Nilsson,
drawing the ire of Rose Dander manager Ed Taylor, who had planned on
selecting the versatile Australian with his next pick.

The reigning WNYSOMBL champion, ignoring his fans' pleas for pitching
help, prepares to select another "4" fielding, right handed hitting slugger.

The Black Rock Dodgers have gone from a mediocrity last season to the
league's dominant team this season. This photo, showing Shawn
surrounded by some sort of apparition, provides definitive proof that
something supernatural is going on in Black Rock.

A sleepy Dale Kielma in the later rounds of the draft. While the Diamond
Runners took their lumps in their inaugural season, they are looking forward
to a successful sophomore season.

Late in the draft, Tonawanda manager Russ Golata is faced with the difficult
task of deciding between Roger Pavlik and Soloman Torres.
